In Whom or What do You Trust?

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” ~ Psalm 20:7
I find myself being challenged as I reflect on the current status of life and the world around me. I check my investment statements and see no uptick but rather a slow decline. I see the cost of basic necessities like food, gas and just about everything else I need going up with some regularity. Making sense of an ever-increasing complex world and how I fit into it, is becoming a matter of reflection and prayer.
I was reminded of the above verse in relation to my own situation. One can become easily overwhelmed and lose perspective. Some people immediately determine what things they can do differently to improve their situation to ensure they have a growing abundance of provision for what is ahead. They study the markets and make changes to their investment portfolios. They consider all options and explore whether they should have gold and silver in hand, invest in new cryptocurrencies and ensure they have other assets or US funds.
The first three verses of Colossians 3 prompt us with an important principle. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” We are to set our minds upon those things above. Hoes does one do that? Undertaking this principle is not an easy feat when our thoughts and emotions become so entangled and tightly bound.
In essence, we are encouraged to have a heavenly perspective – one that God wants us to have when we commit our ways and challenges to Him. When yielded to Him and asking Him for insight and wisdom, He gives us understanding and often a fresh perspective of our situation.
If we think about taking photos of the scenery around us, we see what is visibly available to our eye, but more recently with the advancement of drones, we can now take aerial shots from varying heights, bringing a whole different perspective from which we are familiar. Might not the Lord do the same thing for us – give us a completely different view from a different lens.
Jesus encourages us not to let our hearts be troubled by the rumour of wars, famines, pestilences and earthquakes – something so evident today. (Matt. 24:6-7). Our lives are but a vapor and our breathe is no more.
I realize the issue for me is one of trust – in whom or what do I trust? Do I trust in my money tucked away in savings and investment accounts or do I trust the Lord to be my source of comfort, peace and joy?
Watching investments decrease in value does test our hearts. Do we really trust money in the ‘bank’ to make us comfortable or is it the knowledge that God has the larger picture of my life and has all things well in hand?
What or whom do you trust in this season?
