As we seek to further understand how our relationship with money impacts our relationship with Jesus, we love it when other voices join in the conversation, offering fresh insights and perspectives. In that spirit, we are pleased  to present a series of podcasts from our friends at More Than Enough Financial Fitness, a nd hosts of the Let's Talk Money radio program.

The Flow of Money

The Flow of Money > Dave and Reb catch up with listeners as they spend time in Isaiah 40 and create a space to receive encouragement from God. Episode #375 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” reminds listeners that the flow and current of money, as with water currents, requires readjusting and readapting to the specific circumstances that people are dealing with. Finding the right tool to contain and manage provision is an important step in becoming financially responsible.

“Provision is God’s domain and when He pours into our life we need a mechanism, a vessel to hold the outpouring of his provision,” David says.

The Story We Tell Ourselves

The Story We Tell Ourselves > While money and numbers may be black and white, the story behind the money is often a lot more complicated than it looks at first glance. In episode #374 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, Dave and Reb look at the story money tells us and the disillusionment that comes when you really look at what your money is saying. Does the story we tell ourselves align with the reality of our financial situation?

“We get to an intersection in life and all of a sudden the path diverges in life. You go through the disillusion, grieving stage and then wonder, what narrative have I been believing? What is the story that God wants to write in my life and my financial journey? If you cling to the old idea, you can never move forward.” – Reb

Coaching Freedom with Gwen Stokes

Coaching Freedom with Gwen Stokes > Dave and Reb are joined by Gwen Stokes on episode #373 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to hear about Gwen’s journey in financial coaching with More Than Enough. By focusing on the practical tools in cash-flow coaching and the exploration into the heart issues surrounding her money story, Gwen encourages others by sharing how she recommitted her financial journey to Christ.

“When you get in the position where you feel so overwhelmed with your finances, having someone to set your feet on solid ground becomes an amazing journey,” says Gwen Stokes.

Give Us This Our Daily Bread

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread > Dave and Reb explore the practical and heart issues surrounding walking with God daily in seasons of need. On episode #372 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, they challenge listeners to not only turn to God for direction on their daily needs, but also question how that direction aligns with God’s will and His way. Whether it’s manna in the desert or a mortgage payment, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to see that God has a plan.

“It requires allowing God to speak to your heart about the practical daily bread, but also allowing the Word to speak to you individually about how to do the Lord’s will and His way,” says Dave.

The Marker Point of Obedience

The Marker Point of Obedience > What do nurture and obedience have in common, and what do they have to do with money? On episode # 371 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, Rev. Ray Borg shares a story of persevering obedience when a journey of financial giving turned into more than he expected. Following God’s directive became a marker point that led Him to grow in financial awareness and the need to nurture God’s word as a seed in His life.

“I realized through the process that I did hear from the Lord, and I needed to be obedient even if the outcome wasn’t clear,” Ray says. “Creating space to nurture God’s word in my heart and emotions is very important so that His word settles in. It is then I can take it to heart and be obedient.”

Intentional Holiday Planning

Intentional Holiday Planning > It’s March break in many places across the country and people are either heading south or dreaming about it.

On episode #370 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts talk about holiday planning that not only includes financial awareness, but God awareness. The old english word for holiday actually means ‘holy day’ and Dave and Reb encourage listeners to set apart time to not simply ‘vacate’ life, but to rest and take time with the Lord.

Hang on to Common Sense

Hang on to Common Sense > No matter how good at math or stewardship you think you are, there is always this certainty that your life brings uncertainty. As much as we’d like to plan for everything, we just can’t because we can’t fully know the future.

On episode #369 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts talk about the importance of verses found in Proverbs 3 that encourage God’s people to walk in common sense and discernment, especially in regards to the unknown. They help listeners think about how to apply common sense and discernment to daily financial management.

Getting Real About Debt

Getting Real About Debt > Dave and Reb want to talk about money, and they want to help you face your debt issues head on! On episode #368 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” they want listeners to get real about financial debt by facing their own financial stories and making a plan. They revisit this much-talked about topic with help from Scripture verses like Psalm 37:21 and James 1:27. Understanding net equity and knowing where you stand at this time and season is also a helpful place to start.

“Remember that it is in debt we are putting ourselves in a position of being enslaved to someone else,” Dave says.

Recent statistics reveal a bleak outlook for Canadians with 45 per cent of Canadians being just about $200 away from meeting financial obligations.* However, Dave and Reb want to encourage people not to lose hope. Getting real about your financial situation is just the beginning of finding your way through.

Expanding Our Window of Tolerance with Amanda Van Noppen

Expanding Our Window of Tolerance with Amanda Van Noppen > How do you talk about money when the stresses and strains of life push you into spaces of overwhelm? How do you know when you are just too stressed to talk about money but you know you need to? On episode #367 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome Psychotherapist Amanda Van Noppen to talk about windows of tolerance and how to recognize when we get outside of those windows. Turning to flight, fight, or freeze options for coping, we can find ourselves unable to manage communication around money, or the sound financial practices we want to develop.

Tune in to the show for tips on how to get back into your tolerance windows so money conversations are helpful and hopeful. Some of Amanda’s tips include deep breathing, going for a walk, giving or receiving hugs and comfort, or finding the best ways for connection you enjoy.

More Financial Reference Points with Rev. Ray Borg

More Financial Reference Points with Rev. Ray Borg >  With so much information bombarding us daily, we can use all kinds of financial markers to determine whether or not we are managing our finances well. On episode #366 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, Rev. Ray Borg engages more conversation with the co-hosts about what these look like in our lives. Following the biblical principle of giving is one such marker.

“God expresses His love to us by giving us resources and we can ask ourselves ‘how are we using these resources for His glory?’” Rev. Borg says. “We can look at whether we are giving at all, and if we are, then where are we giving.”

Welcome to Our Tax Prep Party

Welcome to Our Tax Prep Party >  Are you the type of person who drags your feet when it comes to tax preparation? On episode #365 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome back the More Than Enough Tax team to talk about hosting a Tax Prep Party. It’s an idea they generated to inspire people to add a bit of fun to the tax season and do it with community around you.

“Preparing is always a good idea because it can quickly turn into a messy financial situation if you remain unaware,” Reb says. “Having a party simply makes it more fun and enjoyable while you get the job done!”

Mortgage Renewals Are Coming - Are You Ready?

Mortgage Renewals Are Coming - Are You Ready? > Financial housing experts say there are 2.2 million mortgages coming up for renewal in the next two years. On episode #364 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts encourage listeners to face what is coming especially if they know their monthly mortgage payments are going to experience an increase.

Dave and Reb make a few suggestions on how to manage the upcoming renewals by encouraging listeners to increase how much they can pay right now, even if their renewal isn’t happening for a few months. They also suggest looking at any lifestyle changes that could save money and go towards the mortgage.

“Getting a clear picture of where you are financially, right now, is a great place to start,” Dave says. “This will help you manage the changes that are coming.”

Loud Budgeting Pushback

Loud Budgeting Pushback > Loud Budgeting. A new trend that influencer Lucas Battle named and voiced in a recent TikTok video has taken hold of people’s imaginations. (You can find it here: https://www.tiktok.com/@lukasbattle/video/7317757538676641066) Loud Budgeting is not about not having enough money, but about telling people “I don’t want to spend”. On “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” episode #363, the co-hosts dig into this new idea as a form of pushing back against the tide of consumerism and debt.

“There is a message from some media sources that leaves people feeling there is nothing they can do about the economic reality they are facing with strained finances,” Dave says. “That is simply not true, and Loud Budgeting takes a stand and says ‘let’s do something about it!’”

Marker Points for 2024 with Rev. Ray Borg

Marker Points for 2024 with Rev. Ray Borg > What are your financial reference points in 2024? Dave and Reb begin a discussion with Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada about what we use as marker or reference points in determining our financial and spiritual successes. On episode #362 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” they talk about the differences between blessing and privilege and how our perceptions of God and our financial behaviour have a direct impact on our attitudes around God, ourselves, and money.

“Sometimes we can be so focused on building our own comforts we don’t see that we are creating false narratives around money,” Dave says. “We need to be careful that we don’t equate what we think is good financial behaviour with blessing from God.”

Tax Talk with More Than Enough

Tax Talk with More Than Enough > The More Than Enough tax team joins Dave and Reb on episode #361 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. As the tax preparation season quickly approaches, the special guests talk about both the spiritual and practical details that listeners can consider. They discuss the importance of preparedness, follow-through, and taking ownership and responsibility for tax compliance.

Listen to the end of the show to hear their crazy idea that might just help you get your taxes done!

Hope and Freedom for the New Year

Hope and Freedom for the New Year > There is financial hope and freedom for Canadians to discover in 2024 and on episode #360 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts encourage listeners with the possibilities as they put sound financial habits into practice. Hope and freedom can even come before all debts are paid off because of renewed thinking and behaviour around money. To receive encouragement for the year ahead, tune in to today’s show which is sponsored by Financial Planner Joanne Jehu. Joanne helps clients with financial planning, money management, investments, retirement planning and preparation, as well as areas of risk management including insurance protection. To connect with Joanne and find out more information, go to https://joannejehu.ca/.

Here is a quote from today’s show from the late pastor and author Eugene Peterson who writes about Psalm 130 and the hope we have as we watch and wait for God, like watchmen waiting for the morning.

Hoping does not mean doing nothing. It is not fatalistic resignation. It means going about our assigned tasks, confident that God will provide the meaning and the conclusions. It is not compelled to work away at keeping up appearances with a bogus spirituality. It is the opposite of desperate and panicky manipulations, of scurrying and worrying.

And hoping is not dreaming. It is not spinning an illusion or fantasy to protect us from our boredom or our pain. It means a confident, alert expectation that God will do what He said He will do. It is imagination put in the harness of faith. It is a willingness to let God do it His way and in His time.*

Year-end Reflections

Year-end Reflections > As 2023 comes to an end, Dave shares his process of slowing down after the intensity of the Ottawa real estate market through the pandemic years. On episode #359 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts tell listeners about their experiences and the rhythms of this past season of their lives, as well as how important it is to follow God’s leading, especially through changing financial seasons.

“Understanding what we need for the season we find ourselves in is so important,” Dave says. “Are we preparing the fields, planting, harvesting, or taking a rest? In my case, I have been coming down from some busy years of both planting and harvesting and I am learning how to recuperate and rest with God in His presence even while continuing to run the business.”

The Hope of Christmas

The Hope of Christmas > God is with us. This is the Christmas message Dave and Reb explore on episode #358 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. While many of us struggle with stumped hopes at this time of year, listeners are encouraged to remember that the seed of God came at a time of great challenge and despair. Jesus came as a branch of hope.

They remind all of us that we can walk in His peace and contentment as we know He is with us, release our anxiety to Him, and then turn our hearts to thanksgiving.

“How does Jesus’ hope for us translate into our finances?” Reb asks. “It starts with knowing He is near.”

Meet the MTE Tax Team

Meet the MTE Tax Team! > Not too many people like to think about tax season during the month of December, but on episode #357 Dave and Reb gently get listeners thinking about CRA and tax time by introducing the More Than Enough tax team. Stephen Tibben, Destiny Johnson, and Bron Vasic share their thoughts on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” about their love for numbers and for people, and the need to have a trusted team to help navigate tax responsibilities.

“The map keeps changing but you have to keep doing what is needed and it is easy to miss things,” Bron says. “Having that trusted team is so important.”

Giving by Fire and Faithfulness with Rev. Ray Borg

Giving by Fire and Faithfulness with Rev. Ray Borg > How have our encounters with God impacted our wallets? This is the question that Dave and Reb dig into with Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada on episode #356 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. Together they look at the story of Jacob and his encounter with God found in Genesis 28, alongside the generous journey and gifts of the Magi that we celebrate during this Christmas season.

Jacob’s encounter with God at Bethel reminded Reb of Blaise Pascal’s prayer “Fire”. Out of Pascal’s encounter with God he gave His life wholeheartedly to God, and Reb says that these kinds of encounters fuel our desire to give to others.

FIRE. GOD of Abraham, GOD of Isaac, GOD of Jacob not of the philosophers and of the learned. Certitude. Certitude. Feeling. Joy. Peace. GOD of Jesus Christ. My God and your God. Your GOD will be my God. Forgetfulness of the world and of everything, except GOD. He is only found by the ways taught in the Gospel. Grandeur of the human soul. Righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you. Joy, joy, joy, tears of joy.1

Hunkering Down for Christmas

Hunkering Down for Christmas > To hunker down means to get yourself comfortable in a place or situation and stay in that position for a while. On “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” episode #355, the co-hosts suggest re-thinking Christmas spending and making a plan so that you don’t take a year to pay it off. As they share the latest statistics on 2022 Christmas spending that is still seeing one quarter of Canadians paying off that debt a year later, they encourage listeners to hunker down into the plan and stick with it.

“Making a plan for spending brings clarity and helps you communicate with your family the importance of not going into debt this Christmas season,” Reb says.

Reverse Mortgages

Reverse Mortgages > It’s Black Friday and Dave and Reb aren’t talking shopping! On episode #354 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts discuss the benefits and drawbacks of reverse mortgages. Started in the U.S. in 1961, today, this borrowing product continues to be an option for people who want to stay in their home as long as they can, or may not have the income to support their current mortgage.

Dave and Reb look at some of the specific criteria needed to obtain a reverse mortgage on today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial—a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to find hope and freedom as they effectively manage their finances one day at a time.

Fraud Awareness

Fraud Awareness > Did you know that 49 per cent of Canadians have reported being the target of a recent fraud scheme? Today on episode #353 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts discuss the issue to raise awareness about how prevalent they are. From identity theft and debit-credit card fraud, to online, door-to-door and phone scams, Canadians are being targeted.

“Fraud comes to us uninvited,” Dave says. “So, we need to learn and prepare ourselves as best we can so we keep ourselves from trouble.”

Year-End Generosity with Tim Jenkins

Year-End Generosity with Tim Jenkins > How much is enough? You might find yourself with some financial excess at the close of this year, and Dave and Reb, along with their guest financial planner Tim Jenkins, are encouraging listeners to look at their giving and generosity plan as Canadians head into the last stretch of 2023. Not only are they talking about giving generously of finances, but also time, talent, resources, and expertise.

“The important question is asking: ‘Heavenly Father, what do You want me to do with this money You have given me?’” Tim says. “The margin we have is not for us, but it is for giving to the growth of God’s Kingdom.”

How to Eliminate CRA from Your Estate with Tim Jenkins

How to Eliminate CRA from Your Estate with Tim Jenkins > When it comes to taxes, planning, and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), there is a great need for understanding and awareness when it comes to end-of-life estate planning. So to help navigate how taxation affects Canadians after death, financial planner Tim Jenkins joins Dave and Reb on episode #351 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. They uncover the issues and offer some alternatives to paying a potentially large tax bill.

One way to build awareness, even before death, is asking a tax specialist to create a “terminal tax return” so that individuals know an approximate number of how much CRA will take from the estate.

“It is important to crunch the numbers so that you are aware of the liability,” Tim Jenkins says.

The Problem of Addiction, Part 2

The Problem of Addition, Part 2 > “The currency of heaven is not a dollar bill, but human hearts.” And so friend and pastor Jon Ruby speaks to the solution of addiction in the second of a two-part series on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. On episode #350, the pastor of Ottawa’s Union City Church brings a message of challenge and hope discussing the critical issues around addiction and the not-so-simple solution of abandoning one’s life to Christ.

The Power of Automation

The Power of Automation > Automate. Automate. Automate. Dave and Reb have an enlightening conversation on episode #348 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” as they look at automating payments for everything from taxes to retirement savings to paying down debt. Automating payments is a built in commitment according to Dave and is one way to keep yourself on track with financial responsibilities.

“If you don’t automate payments, the money in your account may get swallowed up by other needs or wants that arise,” Reb says. “But automation keeps us on the right path and helps us stay committed to our financial goals.”

Abounding in Thanksgiving

Abounding in Thanksgiving > Happy Thanksgiving weekend from “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”! On episode #347, Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada joins the co-hosts to talk about how financial giving releases a spirit of thanksgiving within ourselves and within the community we live in. Looking at 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, they discuss how believers in the early church gave sacrificially but with much joy.

“Our giving is really sowing back into the Kingdom of God,” Reb says. “As we are obedient in our giving, others will give thanks to the Lord for the faithfulness and provision God pours out through every one of us.”

Cash Stuffing with Determination

Cash Stuffing with Determination > Cash stuffing, cash wallets, the envelope system. All three of these budgeting tool descriptions reflect the time-tested method of withdrawing cash, setting it aside in marked envelopes in different categories, and then only spending the money you’ve allocated for each. On episode #346 of Let’s Talk Money, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to put their credit cards on ice and get in touch with cash, by trying the cash stuffing method.

“Cash wallets and cash stuffing really mean the same thing,” Dave says. “Whatever you call it, it works for everyone because it is so tactile.”

However, the important thing to do before you start is determining in your heart and mind that you are going to stick to cash. In a society, where debt is the default position it is extremely important to commit to following through.

Recently, on CTV Ottawa morning, Dave was asked to talk about the importance of staying in touch with cash. To watch the interview go here: https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=2754215

The Rule of 72

The Rule of 72 > The Rule of 72 is Einstein’s simple shortcut to figure out how long it takes for an interest-compounded value to double. On episode #345 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts talk about how the Rule of 72 affects debt, and how it can be a motivator for us to get out of debt.

“Debt is a burden, not a sin,” Dave reminds listeners. “Borrowing can limit our giving if it leads to debt as well, but staying away from debt provides us with more freedom. Understanding the interest we pay and how it compounds can be a great catalyst for change.”

Presuming on the Future

Presuming on the Future > How do we navigate the need to plan for the future without presuming on the future? What is the difference between the two? On episode #344 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts tackle this subject looking at verses found in James 4 and Luke 12.

The rich man in Luke 12 tore down old barns and built bigger ones, but soon died. He built up his own treasure and Scripture specifically says that the same fate is inevitable for anyone who builds up their own treasure “but is not rich toward God”. So how does this story inform our own lives today? Dave says it is important to remember that the future is God’s domain and not ours.

“The presumption the rich man made was not in leveraging himself or going into debt, but in expecting that he would live long enough to enjoy it all,” Dave says.

Get Close to the Fire with Rev. Ray Borg

Get Close to the Fire with Rev. Ray Borg > So what will it take for you to become rich? On episode #343 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts dig into the topic of riches with Rev. Ray Borg from notmine.ca. Looking at the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3, they talk about the economic strength of the city in ancient times, and how its prosperity brought a false sense of security and well-being.

The gold, garments, and eye salve were goods that brought much prosperity to Laodicea. The church was likely experiencing that prosperity, and in the Revelation passage, Jesus is pointing out the blindness this is causing. As He did to the church then, so does He warn us and call to us today. He invites us to buy what is everlasting—gold refined in fire, His white garments, and the eye salve that comes from His hand.

Dave and Reb encourage listeners today to draw close to God to hear Him knocking at the door of their hearts and lives in these uncertain days. To hear more of their conversation tune in to this episode. Slow Down and Plan Ahead

Slow Down and Plan Ahead > There is a lot of talk about financial resilience these days, so Dave and Reb join the conversation today on episode #342 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. They also remind listeners to slow down, pay attention, and make a plan when it comes to everyday financial decisions. With school starting and fall and winter expenditures coming, making a plan and saving now will help build strong financial muscle.

“Slowing down involves taking a deep breath, reassessing your situation, and seeking counsel, and it needs to be an intentional part of your financial journey,” Reb says. “It is a healthy spiritual practice, but is also very important for your finances.”

Daily Bread Prayers with Rev. Ray Borg

Daily Bread Prayers with Rev. Ray Borg > Jesus taught us to pray: “give us this day our daily bread”. On today’s Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb, the co-hosts explore daily bread praying with guest Rev. Ray Borg. They remind listeners that each of us is valuable and precious to God, and consequently He cares about the smallest details of our lives. Bringing our financial needs and concerns to God is simply an outflow of that care and love.

Referencing a quote from Tim Keller and his book Prayer—Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God, Ray says that prayers are more than tradition. They bring perspective to life and help us see the big picture, as they “get us out of the weeds” to express our situation to God, and thus enabling us to receive His truth and love.

Dave Answers Your Questions! > On episode #337 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, Reb throws client questions Dave’s way in an effort to create clarity around credit card points cards, the importance of life insurance, and mortgage related questions.

“Credit cards are tools and how we use the tool is really important,” Dave says, as he explains how best to use a points card.

In talking about insurance, Dave points out the reasons behind having insurance, as well as how best to think through having a life insurance policy.

Embracing Financial Discomfort

Embracing Financial Discomfort > Do you think God is interested in your comfort? What if He is not as interested as you are? On episode #336 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts look at how pursuing ease and comfort can lead us into financial trouble. Always going after the comfortable life can be doing more harm than good, especially as it can feed a lack of motivation, purpose and meaning in our lives. Conversely, people who face life’s adversities without running from them, are able to build perseverance and resilience even in their finances.

“What is it we are pursuing?” David asks listeners. “God is interested in our hearts, and I don’t think He is as interested in our comfort as we are. He wants us to build character and resilience and being aware of what He is doing in our midst is very important especially as we struggle financially.”

Reb also suggests that seeking God’s Kingdom won’t always lead us to comfort, but it will lead us to what is good, and God wants what is good for us.

Senior Women Living Together with Pat Dunn

Senior Women Living Together with Pat Dunn > Struggles and hardships can often be the birthplace of new and creative initiatives. On episode #335 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome Pat Dunn of the Senior Women Living Together (SWLT) network, as she shares the story of how her struggle to find a place to live, turned into something beyond what she imagined.

Today, she shares how she is helping dozens of women find affordable housing across Ontario. Less than five years old, SWLT is connecting older women who are interested in sharing hopes, dreams, and living space. Pat reminds women that even in their senior years, they have what it takes to make a difference.

The Steward's Road of Blessing

The Steward's Road of Blessing > The Steward’s role of watching and waiting as a significant part of managing God’s resources.

When Dave and Reb plan out their podcast topics, they usually have an idea of where their conversation will take them. But on today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” episode #334, their surprising discussion takes them from stewards who watch and wait for the King to return, to discovering the road of blessing even in the midst of high interest and inflation rates.

“Having the right focus and then designing your life around what is important to you—especially as you follow Christ—is critical on the journey of stewardship,” Dave says. “And considering what you are stewarding, and how you are stewarding it is essential to understanding stewardship in God’s Kingdom.”

Hospitality 2.0 with Tanya Prinsep

Hospitality 2.0 with Tanya Prinsep > Dave and Reb dig into the topic of hospitality with a special guest.

It’s almost Canada Day, and Dave and Reb continue the conversation with guest Tanya Prinsep as they uncover the beauty of hospitality, on episode #333 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.”

They all agree that while the gift of hospitality spoken of in scripture is a precious calling, each follower of Christ can learn to be kind, loving, open, and welcoming to others. It might look different from person to person, just as it has for decades as Canadians have welcomed immigrants and shaped the country we call home.

Hospitality 1.0 with Tanya Prinsep

Hospitality 1.0 with Tanya Prinsep > Dave and Reb dig into the topic of hospitality with a special guest.

How can hospitality direct your everyday decisions? On today’s episode #332 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome friend and colleague Tanya Prinsep to share the story of how hospitality has shaped her life.

“The attitude of hospitality is about embracing, loving, and accepting people,” Tanya says. “People different from us are to be welcomed, not feared or ignored.”

Amongst the many definitions and scriptural examples of hospitality, the foundation is love—always about sharing the love of God.

Receiving the Seed, Sowing the Seed with Rev. Ray Borg

Receiving the Seed, Sowing the Seed with Rev. Ray Borg > Join guest Rev. Ray Borg on episode #331 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, as they continue their discussion on what it means to live and seek the Kingdom of God, especially in your finances. Not only do they talk about sowing financial seed into people and organizations, they talk about receiving the seed of God’s word and purposes in our lives, and living from that place of God’s care and provision.

“Cultivating our hearts to receive the Word of God is the first step,” Rev. Borg says. “Considering how we are receiving His seed involves a mindset shift.”

“It has been a journey of patience and perseverance, which has led to consistency,” Karen says. “And in facing it all, you find freedom.”

Let's Talk Money with Emily and Caleb

Let's Talk Money with Emily and Caleb >  What does financial coaching look like for young married couples? On episode #329 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts speak with Emily and Caleb Gagnier who share about their More Than Enough financial coaching journey, both before they got married and after. Listen to hear how accountability, practical tools, and the one-on-one coaching relationship has been helping them build a strong financial and spiritual foundation with God.

Both Emily and Caleb say that coaching has helped them understand more fully that their money is God’s money, and how using money is a way to glorify God. With a coach as cheerleader, they have walked step-by-step in paying down debt, and continue to do so.

“It is so nice to be surrounded by people who encourage us,” Caleb says.

Financial Hope and Freedom with Andrew and Martha

Financial Hope and Freedom with Andrew and Martha >  Today’s show gives current testimony to the power of financial coaching.

Both agree that coaching has helped them manage their daily cashflow, but has also helped them get over the shame hurdle that can come with money behaviours.

“Having a coach has been a game changer for us,” Andrew says. “The shame gets lifted because there is no judgement from our coach or the More Than Enough team.”

Finding Financial Joy with Rev. Ray Borg

Finding Financial Joy with Rev. Ray Borg >  Financial Joy. Is that even possible? Rev. Ray Borg of notmine.ca and Financial Discipleship Canada joins Dave and Reb on episode #327 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to explore the possibilities of finding joy in financial stewardship and obedience. This conversation is only the beginning of many, as they dig into what it means to find joy in finances—a joy that starts with a renewed shift in thinking towards God’s Kingdom purposes.

“The journey of our finances is a journey of discovery because we are being fathered by a loving God,” Rev. Borg says. “It’s the joy of discovery of who I am, and the journey of moving forward in obedience and love.”

This joy is found first in changing our minds towards what God says is important. Listen to the show to hear what God’s heart is for us, others, and His Kingdom.

Financial Habits and Practices - the Importance of the Emergency Cushion

Financial Habits and Practices - the Importance of the Emergency Cushion >  What if we taught children that having an emergency cushion is as important as brushing your teeth every day? On episode #326 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, that’s exactly what the co-hosts are telling listeners. Dave and Reb discuss the importance of good habits that turn to long-term practices, especially in creating an emergency cushion as part of financial health.

After listening to one of their favourite devotional apps Lectio 365, Dave and Reb were inspired to talk about habits and practices. (See https://www.24-7prayer.com/resource/lectio-365/, May 4 morning devotional.)

“Habits don’t have to be arduous,” Dave says. “But we do want them to lead to good, intentional regular practices, and as Lectio says, we want our practices to lead to our determined financial goals!”

Steps to Financial Health

Steps to Financial Health >  Dave and Reb don’t know if listeners are getting tired of hearing it, but they want to keep encouraging people to take the five steps to financial health! On episode #325 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, they review the five steps to financial health: building a small emergency cushion, paying off consumer debt, building a larger three—to—six month emergency fund, investing and paying off the mortgage, and giving generously and growing.

“Living on less than you make is essential for these five steps,” Dave says. “And it is also important to sit and consider the cost—the cost of carrying the debt—to understand the reasons why we practise these five steps.”

To help you grasp the why and how of finding financial hope and freedom, listen to their conversation which is sponsored by Stephen Francispillai- Francispillai Law, an Ottawa law firm specialising in real estate, as well as wills and power of attorneys. Shifting Financial Assumptions

Shifting Financial Assumptions > Many people make assumptions about their future. On “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts look at the shifting assumptions interest and inflation are generating, and how God’s words found in the book of James warn us that making assumptions about the future is never a good idea. They dig into the topics of “financial modelling assumptions” and how people can prepare in the face of changing economic tides.

“We make assumptions all the time,” Dave says. “We want the future to be the same as it is now, and we assume that it will be. But these days, normal assumptions around mortgages and home ownership are being questioned.”

To help listeners look to the future in wisdom, Dave and Reb recommend:

  • Facing your current financial reality. That means knowing—in detail—what is going in and going out, and creating a spending plan.
  • Make a plan and stick with the plan. As Dave often says, “plan what you spend and spend what you plan.”
  • Don’t give up in adversity, and keep doing “the next right thing.” This includes diligence and consistency. Again, “plan what you spend, and spend what you plan”, aiming to live on less than you make, pay down debt, and save what you can.

“Above all else, keep your eyes on Jesus, and even—if like Peter—you fall, remember and know Jesus will raise you up again and again,” Reb says.

Knowing Where Your Heart is with Rev. Ray Borg

Knowing Where Your Heart is with Rev. Ray Borg > On today’s show, Dave and Reb discuss more heart and treasure issues, as they discuss the words of Christ.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Those were the words of Jesus over 2000 years ago, and on episode #323 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts revisit those words with regular guest Rev. Ray Borg. They discuss the modern day example of Steinbach, Manitoba which leads Canada in charitable giving, and take a look at where the people of Steinbach are putting their treasure. A CBC news article recently described the community as one emulating a culture of giving. See Ian Froese’s article here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/steinbach-generosity-giving-charity-leads-country-1.6776319

According to the article, “People in Steinbach donate 4.31 per cent of their income to charity, which far exceeds the national average of 0.62 per cent, according to an analysis of tax filing data by Charitable Impact.”

What is Financial Coaching?

What is Financial Coaching? > Dave and Reb dig into the topic of financial coaching and all that it entails.

Many people dismiss the invitation to financial coaching because they simply don’t understand what it is, or the purpose behind it. On today’s episode #322 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts bring clarity to the topic of financial coaching, and how practical accountability can lead people to find the financial hope and freedom they desire.

“Coaching is about a journey and relationship,” Dave says. “Effective coaching is a journey that involves ongoing discovery not only about your finances but about who you are as a person, including your joys, sorrows, goals, and dreams.”

Financial coaching is not financial advice giving, but accountability, clarity-building interactions, and coming alongside people with good questions and listening skills.

“It’s not only about getting out of debt either,” Dave says. “It’s for anyone who wants to get from point A to point B in their finances, acquiring good skills and habits to reach their goals.”

Running the Race on Good Friday

Running the Race on Good Friday > Today’s conversation digs into purpose, discipleship, coaching, and not giving up.

On this Good Friday morning, when Christians around the world are considering the Cross of Jesus Christ, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to “fix their eyes on Jesus” as they run their financial races. On episode #321 of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts reflect on the “joy set before” Jesus, as He went through the suffering of the Cross, and how that can inspire us, even as we navigate the strains and pressures of our everyday financial lives.

“Just as Jesus endured the Cross for the ‘joy set before Him’, we can ask ourselves the question ‘what is the joy set before us’ as we journey,” Dave says. “This speaks to purpose and our understanding of our full identity in Him, which in turn directly affects how we manage money.”

Saver, Spender, Steward

Saver, Spender, Steward > On today’s episode #320, Dave and Reb revisit the topic of stewardship, as surrendered discipleship.

They’re talking about those ‘S’ words again! Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts re-visit some of Reb’s history with the words ‘saver’ and ‘spender’, and how the words “surrendered steward” have brought healing and understanding to her journey with God.

“I used to define myself as a ‘spender’ and I often felt that the label wasn’t good,” Reb says. Somehow I felt the ‘saver’ label that Dave carried was better.”

It wasn’t until their journey at More Than Enough began, that her understanding of surrendered stewardship grew.

“Life is more than the labels of ‘spender’ and ‘saver’,” Reb says. “Being a disciple of Christ is knowing you are a steward of all the resources he has given, including time, expertise, and money.”

Undivided Hearts with Rev. Ray Borg

Undivided Hearts with Rev. Ray Borg > Today, Dave and Reb talk about the trouble with divided loyalties.

How does an undivided heart or split allegiance affect your finances? Rev. Ray Borg from notmine.ca and Financial Discipleship Canada joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” on episode #319 to dig into this critical heart issue around money.
The Psalmist asks God for an undivided heart in Psalm 86:11, and Jesus reminds us of the same thing in Matthew 6. We cannot serve both God and mammon, and if we try, we will end up hating one over the other.
“I have always understood Jesus’ words in Matthew 6 to mean that we can’t serve both, but I have also come to see that when we try to serve both we will end up despising one over the other just as Jesus told us,” Reb says. “That is a scarier thought to me, because I don’t want to end up hating God.”

Let's talk Mortgages

Advertise the Truth to Yourself

Advertise the Truth to Yourself > On today’s show, Dave and Reb talk about the advertising culture influencing us, and the need to spend time with God and be in His Word—to advertise the truth to ourselves.

Jesus tells us in John chapter 8 that we will know the truth, and the truth will set us free. On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” episode, Dave and Reb talk about the need to know God’s truth, but also to be intentional about speaking that truth to ourselves daily. In our culture where we are continuously distracted by the noise of social media, constant streaming, perceived needs advertised to us in an endless loop, and where an average of 694,000 hours of video are streamed by YouTube users each minute, we need to advertise God’s truth to ourselves with intention. (see https://www.wyzowl.com/youtube-stats/

“We live in a world where we are bombarded by advertising each and every day, especially in brand exposure,” Reb says. “It is so important to immerse ourselves in God’s truth around money and possessions so that we will know His truth deep within us, and we won’t be trapped by the false promises of the world.”

Hilarious Giving with Author Lori Guenther Reesor

Hilarious Giving with Author Lori Guenther Reesor > On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” you will learn about gratitude, generosity, and giving.

“If Jesus talks about money, we can too,” says author, speaker, and coach Lori Guenthor Reesor. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome this special guest as she talks about her recent book Growing A Generous Church —A Year in the Life of Peach Blossom Church.

After speaking with Christian financial donors across Canada and spending a lot of time drinking coffee in church basements, Lori crafted a creative non-fiction book out of her Doctorate of Ministry thesis that has created a refreshing road map for churches to pursue and teach giving, gratitude, faithfulness, and financial communication as part of the stewardship journey.

“Silence and secrecy around money gives it too much power,” Lori says, encouraging Christ-followers to learn how to talk about money in a healthy, productive way, including how to give generously.

Gratitude is a big part of this learning, and expressing that gratitude to faithful donors and volunteers in our church families is really important.

It's Not About the Money with Rev. Ray Borg

It's Not About the Money with Rev. Ray Borg > On today’s episode, Dave and Reb talk with regular guest Rev. Ray Borg about the lure of mammon, and Jesus’ call to serve God alone.

Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada once again joins the conversation. This week, the topic centres on Luke 16:13-14, when Jesus declares that it is impossible to serve both God and mammon. It was a challenge to the Pharisees who, the Bible says, loved money.

Money brings power, and that is often what underlies what we seek. Whether it is power, money, or possessions, there is a warning and encouragement from Jesus, to seek God first and serve Him only.

“We need to look at what has captured our hearts and what is taking us off course,” Dave says. “Then we can bring it all to the feet of the Lord, and surrender it to Him.”

211 with John Holyes

211 with John Holyes > Where do you go when you can’t pay your hydro bill? What do you do when you don’t have enough to eat? The answer? Dial 211. Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome John Hoyles, the executive director at Community Navigation of Eastern Ontario/211 East to explain how this navigation system works.

211 is a helpline that connects people to the social services, programs, and community support they need. It is a relatively unknown service available in regions all across Canada. With over 7500 services in the Eastern Ontario database, community navigators receive the calls and help people find exactly which services they need to solve their problems.

This number isn’t just for the vulnerable people in our community, but is for anyone needing help, especially if they don’t know where to go. Living Your Financial Reality

Living Your Financial Reality > What is your current financial reality? How much money comes in and how much is going out? What are you paying in interest to service your debt? Or how are you intentionally saving money? On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts talk about financial awareness, and planning what you spend and spending what you plan. Dave encourages people to focus on planning because paying down debt and saving money are possible—it may just look a little different than when interest rates and inflationary pressures were lower.

“Remember that although this is a season of financial volatility, it doesn’t mean forever,” Dave says. “So try not to focus on all the trouble.”

Dave and Reb remind listeners that saying “yes” to some things, means saying “no” to others. Financial planning, meal planning, and planning of all kinds is so important at this time.

“Live your financial reality, or as Washington Post financial columnist Michelle Singletary says, ‘live your financial truth,’” Reb says. “Knowing the truth of where you are at, and then making a financial cashflow plan is key.”

Dave and Reb talk about making a plan, creating a financial rhythm to support that plan, and most of all understanding the goals and purposes behind the plan.

It's Not Mine, with Rev. Ray Borg

It's Not Mine, with Rev. Ray Borg > Dave and Reb’s dear friend and colleague Rev. Ray Borg joins them on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” today, to give listeners an update on the ministry and work of Financial Discipleship Canada (FDC) and its family of ministries notmine.ca and Advisors with Purpose. The purpose of these ministry organizations is to encourage “whole life” discipleship, especially in how finances play a role in our lives as followers of Jesus Christ.

“Just as it says in 2nd Timothy 2, the work of FDC is encouraging us as followers of Christ to present ourselves to God, not ashamed and understanding God’s word around finances,” Reb says. “They are an invaluable part of God’s work here in Canada and abroad.”

This journey of understanding financial discipleship is simply about committing ourselves daily to Jesus Christ.

“This is about committing our finances to the Lord,” Rev. Borg says. “As we do, He leads us and teaches us. It is something we really need to be intentional about.”

Count the Cost

Count the Cost > In today’s episode, Dave and Reb consider the cost of commitment on our stress levels and our finances.

Dave and Reb welcome listeners to the kick-off episode for “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” in 2023. Instead of talking about financial resolutions, they encourage and challenge listeners to consider their commitment levels to not only financial health, but to all those areas of our lives that can become “overcommitments”. At the beginning of this year, Dave and Reb talk about the wisdom in looking into the year ahead and considering what we are committed to, and how these commitments are affecting our finances.

“It is important to consider at the beginning of this new year, how credit plays a part in what we commit to,” Dave says. “Credit allows us to overcommit in the area of our finances and that can lead us into trouble.”

The podcast hosts recommend sitting down and writing out what you want to commit to this year.

  • Slow down. Write it down.
  • Pray. Wisdom and insight are needed.
  • Count the financial cost of those commitments, and
  • Make every spending decision, a spiritual one.

“As you consider these decisions, be mindful of peace,” Reb says. “The peace of Christ is a great determining factor, as to whether or not you will run with the choice or not.”

Looking Back to Learn

Looking Back to Learn > In today’s episode, Dave and Reb look back on 2022 as a year of change and uncertainty, but held together by the presence and faithfulness of God.

It’s the end of the year, and Dave and Reb can hardly believe it! Today, on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts look back on their year of podcasts as well as areas of personal growth they’ve experienced.

In this year of economic change when so many people are looking for financial answers, they share how God has been using the challenges in their own lives to build foundations. Looking at the words of Psalm 107, they remind listeners that when God’s people cry out, He delivers them from all their troubles. Whether the answers come quickly or slowly, God is the Lord who provides answers when we call.

Christmas Joy with Rev. Ray and Arlene Borg

Christmas Joy with Rev. Ray and Arlene Borg > It’s almost Christmas, and Dave and Reb invite their dear friends Rev. Ray Borg and his wife Arlene to share their favourite Christmas Scripture verses and memories on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. They even manage to talk about money – just a little bit!

The four friends share verses from the book of Hebrews and Isaiah, as well as 2 Corinthians. Listeners might be surprised that many of their favourites speak to why He came to earth as a man, and aren’t about the birth story.

“The season is about so much more than Jesus coming as a baby,” Reb says. “We can’t fully celebrate his birth without being grateful for His suffering, death, and His resurrection, and reflecting on those truths as we consider the baby in a manger.”

Join Dave and Reb’s conversation with their friends, as they reflect on the importance of Jesus’ coming, and why He came: for the joy set before Him! Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. Released to Give

Released to Give > At this time of year, many of us are receiving requests for donations from charities often in the form of gift catalogues as options for gift giving. For many of us, there are more requests than money and this can be disheartening. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts encourage listeners to follow in the footsteps of God, to look to Him, and to plan their giving for 2023, aligning with God’s own generous heart.

“Giving is an attitude of generosity, the very DNA of God in us,” Dave says. “And this time of year is a perfect time to sit down with your family and talk about where you want to give in the year to come.”

Dave and Reb provide practical advice on making a giving plan and sticking with it, just as God’s word encourages us to do. As it says in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Where's your Focus?

Where's your Focus? > Today’s episode reflects on what stress and worry teach us, and how we can trust God more deeply.

What is it like for you going to the grocery store these days? Is there a certain amount of stress you carry over rising prices? On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts discuss how a change in mindset and a focus on who God is, can make all the difference. With a mix of scriptures, they encourage listeners to trust God, and learn what it means to rely on God for daily sustenance.

“When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert, he was focused on His Father and knew how to answer the temptations,” Dave says. “There he taught us that the Word of God is sufficient for our souls and our bodies.”

From Red to Black

From Red to Black > It’s Black Friday and Dave and Reb are talking about planning what you spend, and spending what you plan on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”.

Looking at Colossians 3:1-3, and taking some practical steps on this “shopping holiday” where so many people find deals and businesses go from red to black, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to stay out of debt this upcoming holiday season.

“This is the clear challenge,” Dave says. “Get through Christmas without going in debt.”

If you need help doing that, also remember that November is Financial Literacy Month in Canada and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) has educational resources available that can guide you through the season. Values and Financial Choices with MTE Coach Natalie Rowe

Values and Financial Choices with MTE Coach Natalie Rowe > What do you value? And how do those values directly impact your financial choices and decisions? On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, More Than Enough Financial (MTE) Coach Natalie Rowe discusses these questions and more with the podcast co-hosts.

In her years as a coach, she has seen patterns that reveal how personal values act as “command centres” for every day life. As Natalie says, “they send directives to our habits to do this or that.” Today’s discussion outlines how identifying values, reviewing bills and expenses, and then comparing and aligning those values with the spending choices is a great part of creating a financially healthy plan for your life.

Financial Dates Part 2

Financial Dates Part 2 > Looking at two well-known Scripture verses in Hebrews 10, Dave and Reb talk about the importance of encouraging one another in regular financial dates or what are also called regular money meetings. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts encourage listeners to “not forsake” the money meetings that bring awareness and build trust, and consequently bring encouragement to stay on the good stewardship track of managing God’s resources.

In these financial dates, participants look at three questions:

  1. Where am I now and what is my current financial reality? This involves knowing your bank account amounts, and credit card statements.
  2. Where am I going? This is a forward look over the next two to four weeks, and encompasses how much income you are bringing in, and how many expenses you have and need to pay for. This is about making the spending plan, and committing to it.
  3. Is there anything else? This is a time to consider bigger projects or expenditures coming in the next months, like Christmas gifts, weddings, or vacation plans.

These steps are all a part of developing a healthy rhythm of communication on your financial journey. To hear their conversation, tune in to today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. Financial Dates Part 1

Financial Dates Part 1 > We are talking about talking about money again! On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts talk about the not-so-favourite topic of talking about money and having financial dates. But it is so important to financial wellness, that Dave and Reb want to talk to listeners about it. Again!

The financial date is an intentional time either with yourself, with your partner, or with a trusted friend, where you look at where you are at in your finances, and plan for where you are going.

To hear their conversation, tune in to today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. Financial Litmus Test

Financial Litmus Test > “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” This is what God tells us in the book of Proverbs chapter 22 in verse 3, and on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts talk about being the “prudent person” and preparing financially for the days ahead.

On today’s episode, they discuss the financial litmus tests that can help us in our preparations, including the status of our emergency cushions and credit card debts, and the levels of our giving and our peace.

“These four areas are places of awareness on our financial journeys,” Reb says. “They are part of the overall questions around our financial fitness, and can help measure financial wellbeing.

Mindful in the Days Ahead with Rev. Ray Borg

Mindful in the Days Ahead with Rev. Ray Borg > Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, regular guest Rev. Ray Borg shares a beautiful analogy to encourage listeners to persevere, work as a team, and listen to the trusting and loving voice of God. In the uncertainty and fears facing people during this season, many don’t know where to turn, especially for financial advice. Dave and Reb remind people this isn’t a time to bury your head or focus on past mistakes, but to develop anchoring spiritual and financial disciplines to navigate the days ahead.

“It is important in these days to hold steady and be mindful of yourself, the Lord, and your finances,” Dave says. “In these days we will need to push past the pain to the other side, to the place of strength both spiritually and financially.”

Sharing Everything in Common with Rev. Ray Borg

Sharing Everything in Common with Rev. Ray Borg > Dave and Reb welcome Rev. Ray Borg from notmine.ca and Financial Discipleship Canada to “Let’s Talk Money” today to dig into a portion of Scripture found in Acts 4. Together, they discuss a pertinent question facing Christians in these days: “How can we be like the early church and share everything in common in an effort to alleviate financial strain but at the same time share the hope and life of Jesus Christ?”

Having compassion, opening our hearts as individuals and a community, and understanding that we really need each other is part of this journey.

“One of the questions or ideas I have been challenged with lately is asking the Lord to break my heart with the things that are breaking his,” Rev. Borg says. “There are increased needs in the community, in relationships, in families, and am I allowing these needs to move me?”

They leave listeners with the challenge to ask God what “sharing everything in common” would look like in their lives, their families, communities and their workplaces, while all the while, asking God to stir their hearts to act on what He tells them.

Happy Thanksgiving - Giving Gratitude

Happy Thanksgiving - Giving Gratitude > The outward expression of gratitude is giving, and so is the outward expression of trust. Dave and Reb discuss these two thoughts as part of their Thanksgiving weekend episode. The journey of trusting God in our finances is the journey of growing in our desire to give thanks. It is also a journey of growth as we give our time, talent, resources, expertise, and finances.

“As the needs around us continue within our families, friends and community, the necessity of our gratitude pouring itself out in giving is increasingly essential,” Reb says. “This thanksgiving, I need to remember to love my neighbour as I love myself, while thanking God for all He is, and all He has given.”

This Thanksgiving weekend, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to take some time to express gratitude to God and others with gifts of words, finances, and time.

“When giving becomes this intentional, the trust, joy, and confidence in God is part of the fruit of this spiritual discipline of giving,” Reb says.

Following Jesus

Following Jesus > It’s the story of the rich young ruler, and Dave and Reb share fresh insights into this story on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. Join them and relive the story as you see how the young man ran to Jesus and fell at his feet, looking for eternity. Journey with them as they see how Jesus cut through the layers and pin-pointed what he held “most dear” to his heart.

“Just like the rich young ruler we are often confronted with our own appetites and longings, selfishness and habits, as we sit with Jesus,” Reb says. “And this can be a really good thing as we seek His Kingdom and the treasures we find only in Him.”

To hear their conversation, tune in to today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. A Season to Adapt

A Season to Adapt > On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts continue conversations they have been having throughout the month of September talking about the current economic challenges and the fear and anxiety it is causing in many Canadian families.

They mention an article referencing an Equifax report, giving statistics about the response of Canadians to current economic stress. Go to https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/rising-credit-card-debt-in-canada-1.6571516 to learn more. Reportedly, Canadians are turning to credit cards for financial stress relief, resulting in rising debt.

“This is definitely a time when Canadians are asking how they can respond to increased costs of living, while trying to minimize debt and the financial weight they are carrying,” Dave says. “And the answers need to be explored and pursued as we all become more and more aware of what is happening within our financial journeys. Accruing more debt, is not the answer.”

Saying Yes!  Saying No!

Saying Yes! Saying No! > Expectations and circumstances keep changing in today’s economic climate, and Dave and Reb understand that the word “no” is becoming increasingly important. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, they look at why saying “no” to some things in our lives will be essential to avoid financial trouble ahead.

Today, Dave shares an analogy to help listeners understand.

“Financially, many of us have been driving on a six-lane highway with lots of room to make mistakes, correct, and have freedom to move and spend,” Dave says. “However, as our economy becomes more challenging, it is like we are now driving on a two-lane highway in the mountains, and we are driving ever nearer to the guard rail.”

Dave and Reb encourage listeners to be financially aware, and also to make financial plans as the economy squeezes their finances.

“With driving so close to the financial guard rails, people may not be able to spend as they have over the past few years when interest rates have been so low,” Dave says. “We now need to navigate these changes with our commitments, and perhaps we need to say ‘no’ sometimes, so that we can say ‘yes’ to others.”

Trusting God in Changing Times

Trusting God in Changing Times > Dave and Reb encourage listeners on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to persevere in the financial challenges that these days are bringing, as they hope and trust in God. With increases in cost of living, Canadians are starting to ask a lot of questions about mortgage payments, and how to meet rising prices when their incomes remain the same.

Dave and Reb offer some spiritual and practical advice as they remind listeners that God is trustworthy, and anyone who trusts God will be like a tree planted by streams of water. In a year of drought or financial trouble, people won’t fear because they are connected to the source of living water – Jesus Christ.

The co-hosts also reference a Financial Post article stating that only 39 per cent of Canadian mortgage holders include their mortgage expense in their monthly budget. To learn more about this statistic go to https://financialpost.com/executive/executive-summary/posthaste-canadians-are-worried-about-rising-mortgage-payments-but-that-doesnt-mean-theyre-budgeting-for-them.

The "Not-So-Faithful Steward"

The "Not-So-Faithful Steward" > As we head into the long weekend, Dave and Reb discuss one of their favourite movie characters as an example of a “not-so-faithful” steward on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. Denethor is the ruling steward of Gondor in the movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings. As a steward, he leaves his responsibilities, choosing to believe the lies of his enemy. He stops leading, fighting, and standing for truth. Grief and despair reign in his heart, and he refuses to listen to wise counsel. There are many warnings we can learn from Denethor’s example of stewardship, and Dave and Reb encourage listeners to consider his example, as well as to seriously understand their roles as managers of God’s resources.

“It is so important as managers of God’s resources that we learn what stewardship means and how to carry it out practically,” Reb says. “So often we use that word stewardship without fully grasping what that means in our daily lives.”

Coveting or Content?

Coveting or Content? > On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts tackle a heart-issue money topic. Coveting is perhaps an issue we don’t usually discuss in our daily lives, but God warns us about how coveting, greed, and jealousy can lead us down dangerous paths in our hearts, in our finances, and in our relationships. Dave and Reb discuss what this looks like, and how it comes right up against our desires for contentment.

In Hebrews 13:5-6 God says:  Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Tune in today’s show as Dave and Reb discuss how God’s presence meets our deepest needs.

Listen Carefully

Listen Carefully > Today’s topic on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” was inspired by a quote from Chris Anderson, the head of TED TALKS, in his book TED TALKS — The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking: “When people aren’t prepared or ready to listen, communication can’t happen.” Dave and Reb speak about listening carefully on today’s episode and challenge our thinking about communication. Even God challenges His people to listen carefully to Him in Isaiah 55. They want you to consider how well you are listening to God, and to others, especially when it comes to spending money.

     Isaiah 55 verse 2 says:

Why do you spend money for what is not bread,

And your wages for what does not satisfy?

Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,

And let your soul delight itself in abundance.

Dave and Reb leave listeners today with two weighty questions: “Where am I spending money on what does not satisfy?” and “Am I truly listening for the answer?” Tune in to hear their discussion. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. To order Reb’s e-book, audio book, or soft-cover copy of Cultivating Trust: Finding God’s Hope and Freedom for Your Finances, go to www.morethanenoughbooks.com.

Back to School

Back to School > We are less than one month away from back-to-school season, and Dave and Reb remind listeners to keep planning for the financial commitments that come with it. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts provide tools and reminders for avoiding debt with the many activities and school commitments starting up in September. Listen to today’s show and hear how you can include your children in this discussion.

“Partnering with your kids in spending decisions as opposed to having combative discussions is one of the best ways to navigate this season,” Dave says.

     Other tips include:

  • Making a plan
  • Sticking to the plan
  • Discussing your ideas with your kids
  • Hearing their ideas
  • Asking your kids to contribute something towards the costs

To get a few more ideas about back-to-school spending you can read this blog at https://myratecompass.ca/blog/personal-finance/back-to-school-shopping/.

God's Faithfulness in Finance with Dr. Rebecca Sutherns

God's Faithfulness in Finance with Dr. Rebecca Sutherns > Dr. Rebecca Sutherns, CEO of Sage Solutions, shares her money story on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. After 31 years of marriage, four children, one grandchild, and 25 years of work in her business as a Certified Professional Facilitator, Dr. Sutherns reflects on the biblical financial principles she has carried throughout her life, as well as the beautiful financial foundation she and her husband have received through great mentors.

In sharing her money story, Dr. Sutherns expresses five areas of strength she has learned and developed with God and money. She has learned:

  1. a willingness to talk about money,

  4. to know where her money goes by recording and keeping track, and
  5. to have big picture goals for finances, including generosity.

“The way we handle our money reflects our understanding of God,” she says. “And we ought to handle our money in a way that reflects God’s character.”

A Story of Hope with Patty Grose

A Story of Hope with Patty Grose > Hope can be hard to find in the midst of illness, tragedy, and challenging life circumstances. But hope is exactly what Dave and Reb’s lifelong friend Patty Grose shares with listeners on today’s episode of Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”.

Her story is one of loss, and is lined with a strong message: make sure you have a will and estate plan in place. After losing her husband suddenly, she and her seven-year-old daughter were left to grieve and carry the responsibility of a family-owned business. The will they were putting in place was not finalized by the time he died, and this propelled them into a myriad of obstacles, challenges, and lessons in the months ahead. Add to that, a cancer diagnosis, and Patty would need to lean into the Lord like never before.

Listen to Patty share her story of sorrow, hope, love, and God’s provision in the midst of these circumstances. Go to willful.co to find out more about online will planning. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. Rates, Mortgages, and Inflation

Rates, Mortgages, and Inflation >There is a lot of concern over inflation and interest rates in the Canadian economy, but on today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” the co-hosts want to encourage listeners to take some time, breathe, and consider the historical context for interest rate fluctuations. To help Dave keep context, he keeps the historical interest rate graph from 1935 to present day on his desk. Alongside that, he also encourages listeners to create a financial plan and stick to it.

“Live on less than you make, build an emergency cushion, pay down debt, and keep capturing your money efficiently, making sure it goes where you want it to, so that you don’t get into financial trouble,” Dave says.

As Proverbs 27:12 in the Message translation says, “A prudent person sees trouble coming and ducks; a simpleton walks in blindly and is clobbered.”

Neither Dave nor Reb want to see anyone get clobbered.

Good Talk, Bad Talk with Rev. Ray Borg

Good Talk, Bad Talk with Rev. Ray Borg > Are money conversations always a good idea? That is the question Dave and Reb tackle with monthly guest Rev. Ray Borg on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”. In all their podcasting years, Reb is sure they have never talked about “unhealthy” money conversations, and in light of growing economic uncertainty, they are hearing more and more money words that are stirring up strife and fear.

“I guess we need an adjective in front of the word “conversations” — like healthy, good, wise, helpful,” Reb says. “We can be honest with one another without stirring up fear, as we encourage one another to trust God in every situation, and in remembering the faithfulness of God in trying times.”

Tune in to hear their words of encouragement based in Scripture, and their heart to see listeners focusing on the hope of Christ.

In reference to a quote shared on the podcast, here is a portion from John Fenn, leader and pastor of Church Without Walls International: The Lord’s provision may not be what we’d always like. For some it may be multiple generations living under the same roof to save money. It may not be seen as the highest and best solution, but it will be the Lord’s provision for many. People will need to start gardens to supplement their groceries – yet that may be the Lord’s provision. Discipline of lifestyle and delaying or cutting back on extras may be required – and yet what we have to do in common sense is the Lord’s provision. We keep a positive attitude, worship, and look for His provision. (This was taken from his newsletter on June 22, 2022.)

Pause and Celebrate!

Pause and Celebrate! > Happy Canada Day! While these past years have come with difficulties and challenges for Canadians, Dave and Reb encourage listeners on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” to take a deep breath today and pause to celebrate! Reb asks listeners what our families and communities would look like today if we just gave thanks for all we have been given.

On this day when so many communities are celebrating with barbecues and fireworks, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to be intentional about setting aside time to give thanks. They refer to Colossians 6:7 as a source of hope, as well as a reminder that we are rooted in Christ, and as we are built up in Him, our faith will grow, and we will overflow with thanksgiving.

"The roots of Christ are to grow deep within us and the end result will be a thankful heart,” Reb says. “That is just amazing! Sometimes we have to crank the handle to prime the pump to remember we are rooted in the God of the universe. When we turn our heart to Him, it is an intentional act as we set our minds on Christ.”

Simple Business Strategies with Bron Vasic

Simple Business Strategies with Bron Vasic > Today, More Than Enough tax specialist and coach Bron Vasic joins “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to talk business strategy. When people are asking about tax strategies for business, Bron suggests the first focus points should be about making the business profitable, then entrepreneurs can learn best tax strategies based on their circumstances. Making a plan and being committed to the plan is essential, especially in today’s economic climate. Also important to the business journey, is talking with other business people about their successes and failures. Learning and gleaning from others is key to successful planning.

“It is important to get as much information as possible to create a business map,” Bron says. “And then decide what is going to be on that map.”

When people are starting out on the entrepreneurial path, it is important to recognize if your business idea is actually a business idea, or if it is simply a hobby.

“Hobbies cost time and money,” Dave says, “ Hobbies aren’t profitable, but a business is designed to make a profit, where you get a return on the investment of time and effort you have put into it.”

Capture your thoughts, Capture your finances.

Capture your thoughts, Capture your finances. > Have you every thought about how you think about money and possessions? Or the heart issues around them? On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts look at God’s directive about taking every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ (see 2 Corinthians 10). One minute you can be thankful for what’s in the bank, the next minute you think there is never going to be enough. There are hundreds and thousands of thoughts we have daily, and Dave and Reb take a serious look at the need to capture our thoughts, but also the need to capture the reality of what is happening in our spending plans, as well as in our hearts towards God. Tune in to hear their discussion, as they also outline the need to capture financial margin every month. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. Provision in the Wilderness

Provision in the Wilderness > Rev. Ray Borg from notmine.ca joins Dave and Reb today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to talk about the provision Israel received from places of slavery through the desert and into the promised land. The same provision they received in ancient times is the same provision available to us. God made known his ways to Moses, and his deeds to the people of Israel, according to Psalms 103. This knowledge of God’s deeds and His ways is available to us as we journey in our finances today.

God provided the fire and cloud on Israel’s journey to the promised land. He gave them food and water. He gave them His Presence. They had what they needed, and God has given us what we need, if we just open our eyes and ears to what He is doing around us.

“There is so much going on,” Rev. Borg says. “I don’t want to miss in this season what He is doing in my heart.”

Attentiveness and intentional time with the Lord are key components to understanding how God is working in the hard places, and in the places of promise.

“As Brian Doerksen writes in one of his songs, we ask God to show us His way, His Truth, and the road that always leads us back to Christ – that is the Jesus way,” Reb says.

Listen to the show and click the link to Brian Doerksen’s worship song “The Jesus Way“, to find encouragement no matter where you find yourself on your financial journey.

Overcoming Decision Paralysis

Overcoming Decision Paralysis > Financial decisions come in all shapes and sizes, and in these days of increasing interest rates and inflation, some of these decisions may be harder and harder to make. Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” the co-hosts talk about decision paralysis, and how listeners can apply the Word of God to their financial decision making process.

Trusting in God, waiting and praying, getting rest and sleep, and finding wise counsel are all a part of the preparation God has given us to tackle these challenging seasons.

“There are so many options available to us and that can create havoc when needing to make a financial decision,” Reb says. “Or we don’t have the capacity in this year of 2022 to think through the decision making process. That’s why the Word of God is so helpful and pertinent.”

Scriptures from Proverbs 3, Psalm 3, Psalm 27, Matthew 11, and Proverbs 11, 15 and 19, are among the verses Dave and Reb believe will help Christ-followers on their path of hearing from God.

Building an Emergency Cushion

Building an Emergency Cushion > One of the key tools in the More Than Enough debt-repayment tool belt is an emergency cushion, and on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts give direction on how to build a cushion so we don’t need to turn to credit in emergencies or crisis.

Doing this exercise means we will live on less than we make, and then capture that “extra” money and put it in a separate account over a three-month period. When unexpected expenditures hit, we are then prepared to draw that money out, instead of using credit.

“Having an emergency fund has been one of the most helpful and effective tools we have used on our financial journey, whether or not we were earning a lot of income or not,” Reb says. “You really don’t understand that until you build one, use one, and then keep filling it up.”

To learn more about building the cushion, tune in to today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company empowering people to effectively manage their finances, while finding hope and financial freedom one day at a time. You can also learn more about the emergency cushion by listening to the financial fitness seminar led by Dave and Reb by going to these links: Financial Fitness Seminar link, or for a shorter version Debt Snowball Link. To order Reb’s e-book, audio book, or soft-cover copy of Cultivating Trust: Finding God’s Hope and Freedom for Your Finances, go to www.morethanenoughbooks.com or email info@morethanenough.ca, to arrange a pick-up from their Ottawa office.

Financial Decisions as Spiritual Decisions

Financial Decisions as Spiritual Decisions > What would it look like if you had stress-free nights, where you didn’t worry about how you were going to pay the next bill, or where you were going to get the money to pay your taxes? What if you learned to live on less than you make? What if that isn’t even possible with the rising cost of living? Dave and Reb tackle some of these thoughts and questions on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”.

There aren’t always easy answers, especially in light of increased costs like gas prices happening almost daily, but the co-hosts encourage listeners to bring their financial worries, hopes, and dreams continually to the Lord. He is the One to bring the wisdom needed in every decision.

“Isaiah 30 tells us that though we walk through adversity, we can hear the voice of God directing us,” Reb says. “Verse 21 says that our ears will hear a word behind us, saying ‘this is the way, walk in it.’ Whenever we turn to the right or the left, He is with us keeping us on the path that is best for us.”

When is Enough, Enough?

When is Enough, Enough? > Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada joins Dave and Reb today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to tackle the topic of enough. What is the baseline for wealth? How do we know when enough is enough? What is God asking of His followers in this season? With costs rising, people are asking tough questions around cash flow and budgeting. On today’s episode, Dave and Reb hope listeners find encouragement and strength in their financial journeys with God.

“As Christians, our baseline of wealth is recognizing that all of our resources find their origin in God,” Rev. Borg explains. “Our faith is being stretched in a new way in this season, and we need a level of trust we haven’t had before.”

It is this deeper trust — as we understand God is our source of everything we are and everything we have — that will be the strength we need during these times of financial adjustments.

“It is important that we also learn to take our cues about finances from our relationship with the Lord, as opposed to the culture around us,” Rev. Borg says.

Jesus Centered with author Dr. Steve Brown

Jesus Centered with author Dr. Steve Brown > Today, Dave and Reb welcome a special guest to “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.” Author and Arrow Leadership President Dr. Steve Brown shares highlights from his most recent book Jesus Centered: Focusing on Jesus in a Distracted World. Together, they discuss the importance of focusing on Jesus especially in the area of finances.

Dr. Brown shares how focusing on Jesus in all areas of our lives creates a change in thinking, including in the area of finances.

“We begin to understand we serve with Jesus, not just for Him,” he says. “We also see that Jesus walks into our shame and defeat and changes the story of our lives.”

With so many global events affecting our daily lives, the message to daily re-focus on the hope, love, and presence of Jesus is essential. Listen to today’s episode to hear how Jesus walks with us into both the shame and joy of our daily lives to re-create a new life-giving narrative even in the midst of difficult circumstances. To find Dr. Brown’s book go to https://www.arrowleadership.org/resources/jesus-centered-book/.

How then shall we live?

How then shall we live? > Dave and Reb have been hearing a lot of questions from listeners and More Than Enough clients about how to make practical financial decisions in the midst of rising interest, inflation, and costs of daily living. The bigger question from all of these is addressed on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.”

How then shall we live? It is a question that begs an answer but is not so easy to resolve.

As costs rise, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to be intentional and consider the choices that need to be made in daily cash flow management.

“As Gandalf the Wise stated in Tolkien’s novel The Fellowship of the Ring, ‘one must tread the path need chooses,’” Reb says. “The question we need to consider is ‘where are our needs leading us?’ And what are some of the tough choices that need to be made?”

Listen to today’s show to hear some spiritual, heart suggestions that will help guide each of us back to the Lord for wisdom, love and support, as we navigate the practical issues of how and where we save and spend money.

Talking Love and Money...Again

Talking Love and Money...Again > It has been a few months since the Valentine’s Day show, but Dave and Reb want to pick up where they left off. On “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” today, they dig into an assumption married couples can develop that can hinder their finances and their marriage.

The idea that “whoever earns more should have more control or more say in their finances” is a thought known as the “ownership assumption.”

“Making this assumption is like putting power and money in the same pot,” Dave says. “And that is just not going to end well.”

Dave and Reb stress the importance of remembering to love your neighbour as yourself because in this instance your neighbour is your spouse.

“We want to create spaces of safety, intentional discussions and honesty in our marriages,” Reb says. “You may feel you deserve more because you make more money, but you need to hear your spouse on how they are feeling about it. This is about more than just you.”

To learn more about this assumption, and others we can make around money and marriage, go to https://thriveinloveandmoney.com/. Some of the information referenced in today’s show can be found in Shaunti and Jeff Feldhahn’s book thriving in love & money – 5 Game Changing Insights about Your Relationship, Your Money, and Yourself.

Surrendered Giving on Good Friday

Surrendered Giving on Good Friday > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” the co-hosts welcome Rev. Ray Borg from notmine.ca for the second of a two-part series on giving. This episode focuses on how a surrendered life is a giving life, and how Jesus is the perfect example of that life. Together, they encourage people to open-wide the windows of limiting beliefs that keep them from living a surrendered life of giving.

You will need to tune in to find out how Philippians 2, a quote from Reb’s book, and the idea of limiting beliefs, can transform your understanding of giving.

“Jesus’ humanity, His humility, and His act of surrender to His Father’s will is so important to consider,” Rev. Borg suggests. “Then it leads me to ask the question: am I that surrendered, especially in the area of giving?”

Rev. Borg, along with Dave and Reb, uncover some of the heart issues around giving on today’s show. These topics are not easy ones to consider, especially in the atmosphere and challenges we are facing in the world today. However, together they encourage listeners to go back to the life of Jesus, and consider how He gave, especially on this Good Friday morning.

Positioned for Giving

Positioned for Giving > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” the co-hosts welcome Rev. Ray Borg from notmine.ca in the first of a two-part series on giving. This episode focuses on a key question: what do we believe about giving? Once we start to understand the answer to this question spiritually, philosophically, and practically, we will know ourselves better. This understanding will also provide a foundation and position for our giving.

Looking at several wisdom verses found in James 3, together they discuss what wisdom in giving looks like, and how we can hold these verses up as a mirror to our financial situations.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:13-17

“These verses are a practical guide and mirror to help us navigate the heart of giving,” Dave says. “From them, we can consider if our finances reflect the qualities of wisdom like being peace-loving, considerate, and full of mercy. Giving reflects this kind of wisdom.”

Happy April Fool's Day

Happy April Fool's Day > Dave and Reb have a big announcement to make on today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.” The announcement may surprise you. It may horrify you. But rest assured, Dave and Reb have your best interests at heart. (And no, they are not having another baby!)

“We don’t want to spoil the announcement, but want to direct you to today’s show,” Reb says. “We are hoping that this announcement will prompt some insights, actions, and reflection. We really hope it will be transformative for our clients and listeners.”

Fact, Faith, Fear - Part 2

Fact, Faith, Fear - Part 2 > Dave and Reb continue their conversation about financial facts that concern us, fears that lead us, and faith that strengthens us, on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.” In light of this Lenten season, they also reflect on the work of the Cross, the beauty of Christ’s victory, and the need for surrender in our finances as we journey in faith.

God is wanting to pour His new wine of love in and through us to this hurting world of 2022, but who we were several years ago, will not be able to hold what God wants to do in the days ahead. Dave and Reb share their hearts about the need for “new wine skins” on today’s show.

“There is so much love to share and give, and what we have been experiencing may be shaping in us character qualities that will be able to stand, persevere, and carry God’s great goodness into the days ahead,” Reb says. “I don’t know what is coming, but we will need to stand together in faith and trust in God, and not give in to the worries and fears that are so prevalent.”

Fact, Faith, Fear Part 1

Fact, Faith, Fear Part 1 > Many financial questions are swirling around these days about the future ahead. On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” the co-hosts uncover some facts, address a few fears, and look at how both are affecting our faith and walk with God. With concerns over gas and food prices rising, many people are wondering what to believe about the future ahead. Dave and Reb encourage people from Jesus’ words found in Matthew 6, and remind listeners that there is a strong history of God taking care of His people.

They invite people to step away from the edge of fear and put their lives in the solid hand of God.

“It is like we are intentionally standing on the edge of a big cliff of fear, and the slightest breeze will knock us over,” Dave says. “But we can intentionally step back, not allowing our emotions to lead us, and turn to God with our anxieties and worries. Making fear-based decisions is never a good idea.”

Reb encourages listeners to identify their financial fears, especially when those fears “speak” doubt: Will God really supply? Did God really say? Is He really good?

“Those questions in our hearts and minds can sound a lot like Satan’s questions to Eve in the garden,” Reb says. “And as those questions led Eve to a life of independence, away from God, so they can lead us.”

Legacy with Brent Vandermeer

Legacy with Brent Vandermeer > What are we leaving behind? It seems to be a question many are asking, and Dave and Reb welcome Brent Vandermeer, financial advisor at CrossPoint Financial, to weigh in on the importance of legacy on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.” Leaving a legacy does not only involve leaving finances to the generations behind us, but leaving spiritual wealth and wisdom, as well.

“We always need to remember that money is a tool we use to try and do good in the world,” Brent says. “Leaving a legacy is really the story of a life well lived.”

Taking a look at Deuteronomy 6, Dave and Reb talk about how God wanted His people to remember Him, and how He had led them out of Egypt. In this passage, God reminds them that they live in houses full of good things which they did not fill, drink from wells which they didn’t dig, and eat of vineyards and olive trees that they did not plant (see verses 10 to 12).

“This is a poignant reminder to us today, that in the legacies we receive, or in the legacies we want to leave behind for our families, God is the author and owner of them all,” Reb says.

To learn more about Brent’s work and his heart behind the purpose of investing, go to https://www.crosspointfinancial.ca/. Investments and Inflation with Brent Vandermeer

Investments and Inflation with Brent Vandermeer > Dave and Reb welcome Brent Vandermeer, financial advisor from CrossPoint Financial, to this episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb.” With inflation rising, the cost of goods increasing, and income often not keeping pace, questions around long-term investing are on the minds of many. On today’s show, they talk about what inflation means, and what considerations need to be made in investment portfolios. Their discussion takes place alongside Jesus’ words in Mark 8 to remember and understand that we have a heavenly Father who is good and provides for us.

As people are feeling the crunch of earnings not keeping up with inflation, people are also considering how to decrease or cut costs, as well as increase earnings. That can involve looking at savings and investments. Right now, that includes increasing awareness of how inflation will affect investments down the road. People who have not considered higher risk investments may need to do so as investments need to grow in such a way as to keep desired standards of living at certain levels.

Listen to today’s show, to hear some of Brent’s considerations, and to hear more of his heart around the purpose of investing. To learn more, you can also go to https://www.crosspointfinancial.ca/.

More ADHD Conversation with Dr. Beth Anne van Noppen

More ADHD Conversation with Dr. Beth Anne van Noppen > Financial Awareness can be challenging for many of us, but for those struggling with Attention-Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, it can be overwhelming. Dave and Reb speak with local physician, Dr. Beth Anne van Noppen on today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” where she provides practical tips on how to manage money. Keeping a simple budget, giving yourself a 24-to 48-hour spending rule, using cash, or using an APP that provides you with visual envelopes are among the helpful ideas and tools discussed on today’s show.

Dr. van Noppen says it is important to remember that you can manage money. It may not be easy or intuitive, but it can be done.

“You can do this,” she says. “There is hope, and I think if people can simplify, take small steps, managing your money is possible.”

She also provides encouragement to partners or parents of those with ADHD. She suggests people learn more about ADHD to understand that people aren’t intentionally or deliberately ignoring you or disrespecting you.

“It’s really a brain wiring issue rather than a moral issue,” she says. “Being patient and understanding that you are a team, where you use one another’s strengths to grow and develop are also really helpful and important considerations.”

Preparing for Renovations with Justin Charron

Preparing for Renovations with Justin Charron > Dave and Reb invite their friend and contractor Justin Charron to join them on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” to talk about the ins and outs of planning for renovation projects. After going through their own renovation experience during Covid-19 lockdowns, they share with Justin their insights and questions about their experience.

Attaining written estimates, having ongoing communication, planning financing ahead, and developing trust with your contractor is all a part of keeping your project renovations on a good projectory.

As a project manager at Olistin Homes, a partner of MR Kitchens, Justin also believes that written estimates and understanding your financing are essential before starting a project.

“Having a clear understanding of your budget is important so that your selections are in line with that financing,” Justin says.

Listen to today’s show to hear their encouragement to plan wisely, and as much as you are able, expect the unexpected.

Talking Love and Money

Talking Love and Money > It’s almost Valentine’s Day and Dave and Reb are talking love and money on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. To help listeners understand the fragility of these conversations, they have brought in some tea cups to help illustrate the delicate nature of money conversations, especially in marriage. Sometimes we come into money discussions with perceptions, wounds, or misunderstandings that can create conflict we weren’t expecting. Before we know it, the tea cups are shattered.

“I think it is a great idea to come into your financial date with either a tea cup in hand, or a sturdy mug – something that represents how you are feeling that day,” Dave says. “This is a visual reminder about how you are coming into the conversation and it may create an atmosphere of grace and understanding.”

Listen in to today’s show to hear more about tea cups, limiting beliefs, and how you can navigate some of these challenging conversations. One resource that Dave and Reb find helpful in navigating financial discussions in marriage, family, and community, is the book by Shaunti and Jeff Faldhahn called thriving in love & money; 5 Game-Changing Insights about Your Relationship, Your Money, and Yourself. You can find out more about them at https://thriveinloveandmoney.com/.

Walking with People in Financial Crisis

Walking with People in Financial Crisis > Many people struggle with daily financial cash flow management. Some of us watch our friends and family as they work through these challenges. On today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts provide some tips for how to walk with people in financial crisis. There is no simple or easy answer, but Dave and Reb share some of the things they have learned “on the journey,” while admitting they haven’t always done it well.

Here are a few ideas they offer to listeners:

  • Pray for wisdom and understanding, as well as the right timing to ask the questions and have the discussions.
  • Show up with compassion and humility. Leave advice-giving at the door. Sometimes good questions, a listening ear, and your presence is all that’s needed.
  • Ask good questions. If you want to understand the importance of questions listen to these two “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” podcasts with Coach Dr. Keith Webb recorded earlier.
  • Find formal help from a financial coach, advisor, or pastor. There is wisdom to glean from others who have experience in walking with people through financial challenges.
  • If you find that your friend or family member isn’t hearing your concerns, follow the model found in Matthew 18:15-20 where you involve others in your community to walk through the process.

Let's Talk Tithing

Let's Talk Tithing > The discussion of tithing may or may not be a controversial subject for you, depending on your perspective. Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” the co-hosts welcome Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada and notmine.ca to discuss the subject of tithing and giving from a cheerful heart, as they provide a perspective of grace and generosity. They don’t provide black and white answers, but do their best to create a foundation of truth and understanding for those wondering if tithing applies to Christians today. Looking at the story of the first tithe by Abram in Genesis 14, they dig into the heart of tithing and giving as an act of worship.

“Having the Holy Spirit living in our lives, means we allow Him to access our hearts, check out our motives and bring to light areas like tithing,” Rev. Borg says. “I do believe it is part of worship unto Him…and as our hearts are yielded to Him and we ask Him to lead us in our giving and as an act of worship, we give as He directs. Our giving and tithing are not done out of legalism, shame and condemnation, or even manipulation, but as extravagant worship unto our King.”

Whether we follow a 10 per cent rule for giving, or give much more or much less than that, Dave and Reb urge listeners to do it out of a heart of gratitude and relationship with the Lord.

“This isn’t about following the rules, but living out of a relationship with God, and seeing the wonderful adventures of giving that He invites each of us to be a part of,” Reb says.

Today’s show was inspired by a SeedTime Money recording with Bob and Linda Lotich. Follow this link to hear their discussion. https://seedtime.com/3-types-of-tithing/?fbclid=IwAR1e0XQrTzMvHhgVtfTxa27i7pQob0-t8xrfoV-Dx0etpfVP7cQ3htjilEQ

Tax Preparedness

Tax Preparedness > Dave and Reb welcome More Than Enough’s financial tax coaches Bron Vasic and Destiny Johnson to today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money”. Together, they dig into the issues of financial hope and freedom in personal tax preparation.

Being proactive alleviates stress and anxiety, and allows individuals to think clearly about what tax preparation is needed before the April 30th personal tax deadline.

"Some people feel like they are going to the principal’s office, or feel like ‘Big Brother’ has found them out when it comes to the Canada Revenue Agency,” Bron says. “Some people are frozen by fear, and we, at More Than Enough, want to help alleviate all of that.”

Spending time each week collecting documentation for income tax purposes can happen as early as the beginning of the year. In fact, it can happen all year long.

“Understanding what is required of you, is also a part of the planning tax process,” Destiny adds.

Bringing Hope and Freedom

Bringing Hope and Freedom > It’s mid-January and at the start of this new year, Dave and Reb take time on Let’s Talk Money today, to get re-focused on the More Than Enough calling of bringing hope and freedom into people’s financial journeys. Together, they dig into what financial hope and freedom looks as followers of Jesus Christ.

“At More Than Enough in our coaching department, and throughout our mortgage and tax departments, the words that keep us focused on our task and calling are the words hope and freedom,” Dave says. “At every team meeting we ask each other how we are bringing hope and freedom into the lives of others.”

Hope is something that Dave and Reb recognize as essential in these challenging times.

“So many circumstances can strip us of our hope, especially around personal finances,” Reb says. “But God’s word is clear that hope doesn’t disappoint because God’s love has been poured out to us by the Holy Spirit. The heart issues around financial hope and freedom, relate to how we see, love, and have relationship with God on a daily basis.”

Preparing to be Flexible

Preparing to be Flexible > Dave and Reb start the New Year with preparedness and flexibility on their minds. It’s the first “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” podcast of 2022, and they are still passionate about talking money. They encourage listeners to slow down, to make every financial decision a spiritual one, and to bring God into all their conversations about money.

“Flexibility doesn’t mean throwing out the plans you have,” Dave says. “But it is continuing to check with the Father as you work out the plan. It’s making every spending decision a spiritual one.”

They remind listeners of Proverbs 16:9 which says, “A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps” (NKJV).

Reflecting on 2021

Reflecting on 2021 > At the end of this year, Dave and Reb take time to reflect on this past year of 2021. On today’s show, they talk about taking time to grieve the losses of the year, but also to give thanks for God’s presence and guidance. They talk about the importance of grieving and gratitude, as they direct listeners to reflect on the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

“Mary’s life was certainly disrupted at the coming of the angel Gabriel,” Reb says. “Her pregnancy was out of her control, but she took God’s promise to heart – He was with her. And that is exactly what we need to do as we head into 2022.”

With the losses and joys of the past year, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to lament and mourn and offer those thoughts and feelings to the Lord.

“On the other side of that lament, will be a heart of thanksgiving,” Dave says. “And that is exactly what we see when Mary says ‘My soul praises the Lord’”.

Listen to today’s show, to understand the importance of lament and thankfulness on your financial and life journey. Cultivating Trust with Ray and Reb

Cultivating Trust with Ray and Reb > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” Rev. Ray Borg interviews Reb about her new book Cultivating Trust: Finding God’s Hope and Freedom for Your Finances. Reb shares her heart with listeners about this pandemic project and how she hopes readers will hear God’s invitation to come to Him with their worries and fears, especially around money.

Reading this newly released book will draw readers into the journey of deeper dependency on God as they dig up the soil of their hearts and plant seeds of hope and trust. Reb believes this is a book of mutual invitation where readers invite God into their financial journey, all the while responding to God by coming and learning from Him.

As Reb writes in her book:

Cultivating Trust with God in finance doesn’t happen on its own. It takes intentionality, time, relationship, knowledge of the truth, and hard work. Just as a farmer ploughs a field, so we walk with God as He turns up the soil of our hearts. He shows us the areas that need cultivating, where the weeds are, and how to carefully watch over the needs of our hearts with grace and compassion. (see page 31)

While the actual writing of the book took only a year, it truly has been a 14-year project, since Dave and Reb started on the More Than Enough journey. Tune in to hear Ray and Reb’s conversation. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. God's Economy at Christmas with Arlene Borg

God's Economy at Christmas with Arlene Borg > This has not been an easy few years for Canadians, so today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb,” the co-hosts invite their friend Arlene Borg to share her love of Christmas and how we can continue to navigate this season and trust in God’s economy for living and giving. She shares tips on how to make Christmas purchases that won’t break the bank, while explaining that generosity and gift-giving are a part of how God expresses His love to others.

“I love all that there is about Christmas. I love the focus of Christmas which is on Jesus coming, his birth and the miracle of God coming in the form of a baby on our behalf,” Arlene says. “Because we have been blessed, I desire to be a blessing. Therefore, giving something special to those I love is important to me.”

Using what you have, simplifying, and purchasing investment gifts that make a difference to people who struggle financially, are among her tips and ideas for this special time of year. She suggests having a good listening ear towards those people you want to give a gift to, while also listening to the Lord.

"Stay alert to what God may provide and listen to what He places in your spirit as an idea,” Arlene says. “My husband loves reading John Grisham books. I was going to buy him the latest one or two last year and then happily found a lady in Stittsville selling a whole library of his books. I studied what Ray owned and then filled in the gaps. So, for the same $50, I gave my husband a dozen books instead of two!”

Dave and Reb affirm Arlene’s belief that no matter how little or how much you have, you can be attentive to God and share His generosity with others. Listen in to hear their conversation. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Black Friday

Black Friday > Black Friday comes around every year, just like Christmas, Easter, and Canada Day. And as we look to this weekend of shopping sales, deals and consumer frenzy, Dave and Reb challenge “Let’s Talk Money” listeners to not only do their Christmas shopping throughout this weekend, but to intentionally give some of their Black Friday money away.

On today’s podcast, they talk about taking some of the money we save and donate it to help those in need. As Dave says, “generosity disarms coveting and greed” and is a great way to reach out into the community at this time of year.

“There will always be deals and sales as long as we live, but the chance to build the kingdom today, only happens today,” Reb adds. “Giving is such an exciting part of our journey with God, and using this weekend to get intentional about giving to those in need is just a part of the adventure.”

Today’s show is sponsored today by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Dave and Reb would love to hear how you’ve intentionally implemented generosity this Black Friday weekend. You can email them at info@morethanenough.ca to tell them your story!

New Builds with Mortgage Specialist Susanna Penning

New Builds with Mortgage Specialist Susanna Penning > “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counsellors there is safety.” That is a verse found in Proverbs 11:14, and on today’s podcast “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb welcome Mortgage Specialist Susanna Penning to provide some of that wisdom and safety for people deciding to build a home.

While the Ottawa, Ontario real estate market has exploded over the last 18 months, with housing selling at an over-asking price and multiple offers on every sale, people are discouraged. Many More Than Enough clients are asking if building a home is feasible in this market and current economy.

Both Dave and Susanna believe that listeners need to educate themselves, and talk to trusted people in the business, before making this decision.

There are four basic suggestions they offer on today’s show:

  1. Plan, plan, plan, so that you can anticipate as much of the unexpected as possible.
  2. Have buckets of cash up front. There are lots of fees outside of simply getting a mortgage, like obtaining building permits.
  3. Communicate, communicate, communicate to everyone in all the details, especially with your partner. As Susanna advised: “Before you build a house together, try wallpapering a room together.”
  4. Know why you are doing this house-build. What is your purpose? Knowing your purpose will carry you through the rough patches.

Celebrating Five Years!

Celebrating Five Years! > Dave and Reb invite listeners to celebrate with them this morning! Five years ago this November, they launched this podcast “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” and they want you to join with them in giving thanks for God’s faithfulness.

“We are amazed that five years has gone by!” Reb says. “And we are also amazed at the content, conversations, and community that have flowed from our time together.”

CHRI’s Station Manager Bill Stevens joins them this morning to talk about the significance of this podcast in the local Christian community. He says “Let’s Talk Money” is important to the fabric of the listening community.

“Christianity is central to our finances, and your show reminds us to build on God’s word in our finances,” Bill says.

With the encouragement of hundreds of listeners across the “Let’s Talk Money” community and the team at CHRI that produces the show, Dave and Reb are filled with anticipation for what is yet to come.

"In these challenging economic times both personally and nationally, we look to God to keep directing us in our conversations and in our obedience to Him,” Dave says. “We are grateful to the community for supporting us as we move into 2022 and beyond.”

Moving Towards Maturity

Moving to Maturity > On “Let’s Talk Money” today, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to think about how they react to financial stress, as they share their own go-to responses around money stress. Dave tends to bury his head in the sand, while Reb leans toward more controlling behaviours.

“When there is stress, it’s important to know what your tendency is in responding to those stresses,” Dave says. “Then, understanding how your partner responds is helpful, especially when it comes to financial issues.”

Looking at verses in 1 Corinthians 3, Dave and Reb also encourage listeners to grow in maturity in the Lord, so that envy, contentions, and divisions don’t rise among God’s people, especially in a family setting.

“Moving toward maturity means slowing down in your decision making process, and in how you respond to others,” Reb says. “These involve very intentional choices. In a world with so much conflict, waking up to our financial journey, and growing up in our responses is not an option.”

Responding to the Supply Chain Crisis

Responding to the Supply Chain Crisis > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb discuss the current global supply chain crisis and our consumer attitudes to how it is affecting our choices, especially as the Christmas season approaches. They remind listeners to be patient, find other solutions, and to learn contentment in the midst of this unprecedented situation.

Attitudes of entitlement may arise, but Dave and Reb share how Psalm 33 can refocus us on the Lord. “No king is saved by the multitude of an army; A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine.” (verses 16-19)

"The Scripture also says that waiting on the Lord is an important part to trusting Him because He is our help and our shield,” Reb says. “Waiting patiently in the midst of these current situations will help us grow closer to the Lord, but also grant us peace.”

On today’s show, Reb references a CBC podcast episode where they talk about the current supply chain predicament. Go to https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-63-the-current/clip/15871774-growing-humanitarian-crisis-afghanistan-global-supply-chain-problems. Start listening at 22:40.

Budget Busters Part 2

Budget Busters Part 2 > Today, on “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb continue the Budget Busting discussion they started at the beginning of September. The More Than Enough coaching team had so many ideas and thoughts about what affects budgets, they decided to keep the conversation going.

One of the big pieces of advice they offer is for people to plan their spontaneity. When people are out and about and see something they haven’t planned for, or want to order something from a restaurant, they spend money they don’t have and for this, Dave and Reb have a suggestion.

“This may sound like an odd idea, but if you can put ‘spontaneity’ as a line item in your budget or spending plan, as we like to call it, and you put money regularly and automatically into that ‘account’ or ‘envelope’, you won’t be caught going into debt over something you haven’t planned for,” Reb says. “I guess it’s planned spontaneity!”

Listen to today’s podcast about those areas of our lives that can cause leaks and floods in our finances, and what you can do to keep them from undermining your goals and dreams. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax, and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Thanksgiving Friday

Thanksgiving Friday > Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada and notmine.ca joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” this morning to reflect on thanksgiving, worship, and our understanding of God. This discussion also looks at how our ideas about God influence how we talk to God about money.

As James Bryan Smith says in his book The Good and Beautiful Life, “what we think determines how we live. If we think God is an angry accountant frowning on us and would love us if only we are good enough, that narrative will be seen in how we live” (found on page 11of his book). Together, Dave, Reb, and Rev. Borg discuss this understanding of God, and how that can influence our worship of Him.

They also talk about how God, through Jesus Christ and relationship with His Holy Spirit, truly is the North Star in our lives in so many ways. As the wise men said in Matthew 2:2, “we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship Him.” On this Thanksgiving weekend, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to take some time to reflect on who God is, and to thank Him for what He means in our lives!

“This is the season to look for His Shining Star, to rise up, give thanks, and worship Him, just as the wise men taught us,” Reb says. “It may not be Christmas, but it is always the season to give thanks and worship Him.”

Talking About Talking About Money

Talking About Talking About Money > After recently hosting a seminar talking about money and communication, Dave and Reb thought it would also be a timely discussion for listeners of their “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. When talking to your spouse, kids, or friends about money, Dave and Reb remind us to walk in love, be wrapped in love, and remember to honour others more than we honour ourselves. Knowing that money and communicating are not easy subjects to tackle, Dave and Reb encourage God’s people to press in and wrestle through the hard conversations.

“Having conversations about money aren’t about saying ‘no’ to one another, but about strategically saying ‘yes,’” Dave says.

Having financial dates regularly throughout the month are key to getting you and your family members talking about money together.

“This is about creating safe spaces for one another, as well as honouring one another as we do so,” Reb says.

Tune in to listen to their discussion. If you want to learn more about how to have healthy money conversations, contact Dave and Reb at morethanenough.ca. Exploring Cryptocurrency with Bold Kere, Part II

Exploring Cryptocurrency with Bold Kere, Part II >  Dave and Reb again welcome Ottawa financial advisor Bold Kere of Bold Care Financial to today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money”, as they continue their discussion about Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and how to navigate this new world of financial digital investing, especially as Christians. Today’s show is the second of two parts where Dave and Reb help listeners navigate this new form of currency in the digital world.

As a financial advisor, Bold stresses that investing in cryptocurrency is not easy, and much research needs to be done. He also encourages people only to invest what they can afford to lose, as there continues to be so much to learn in this type of investing. As he explains, you don’t need to invest in one entire Bitcoin, but it can be purchased in percentages.

Exploring Cryptocurrency with Bold Kere, Part I

Exploring Cryptocurrency with Bold Kere, Part I >  Dave and Reb welcome Ottawa financial advisor Bold Kere to today’s episode of “Let’s Talk Money”, as they uncover the sometimes difficult and mysterious topic of cryptocurrency. Today’s show is the first of two parts where they define and explain this new form of currency in the digital world.

Today’s discussion focuses on the “five Ws” of the crypto world, including understanding crypto’s most popular token – Bitcoin.

As Bold explains, crypto tokens are not usually used in daily financial transactions, but are a form of financial investment for the future. Today, Bitcoin is worth around $45,000 USD.

To learn more about crypto currency, tune in to today’s podcast. Banking on the Future

Banking on the Future >  Dave and Reb welcome Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada to their discussion today about “Banking on the Future”. As Canadians navigate the global pandemic, we continue to borrow from tomorrow, to spend money we don’t have today. Some people count on future inheritance, wage increases, or expected bonuses, and spend them before actually seeing the money in their bank accounts. This can cause trouble if the money doesn’t actually come the way we thought.

“We can develop a plan, trust and hope in that plan, and then make presumptions about the plan,” Ray says. “Is that fantasy thinking, or is this wisdom? How much energy are we spending on thinking about these plans to attain what we want?”

Dave and Reb hope that this discussion raises awareness of how marketing and advertising leads us down the path of relying on credit, and banking on the future. Again Dave reminds people to make a plan, and only spend the money when they have it in hand.

“We need to keep considering how we are to walk as stewards in these days, with so many distractions drawing our attention away from sound biblical principles around money,” Dave says.

Listen to their thoughts and ideas, as they navigate the spiritual and practical connotations of banking on tomorrow.

To consider how many ads we see each day, start with this article https://www.bizjournals.com/bizjournals/how-to/marketing/2017/09/do-we-really-see-4-000-ads-a-day.html#:~:text=Do%20we%20actually%20 encounter%204%2C000,like%20TV%2C%20radio%20and%20print.

Budget Busters

Budget Busters >  “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” tackles the subject of “Budget Busters” on today’s podcast. After talking with their financial coaching team, Dave and Reb gathered a number of budget busters that can derail our financial journeys, like lack of planning, not sticking to a plan, and “unexpected” spending without an emergency cushion.

“After talking with our financial coaches, I am amazed at how many issues they shared that can derail personal finances,” Reb says. “One of the biggest ones we hear about, again and again, is the lack of planning and tracking of monthly spending.”

     Other issues include:

  • loss of salary without adapting regular spending habits to the new salary
  • cost of living increases
  • spending pressure from social media and marketing
  • wanting what our neighbour has, and getting it
  • appliances breaking down with no emergency cushion to fall back on
  • spontaneous spending on both small and large ticket items
  • house renovations that are more costly than anticipated
  • hospitality
  • vacation spending
  • expensive cell phone bills
  • back to school fees, clothes, uniforms, and sports fees
  • Christmas spending
  • lack of preparation and unwillingness to wait

So many of the items listed here have to do with planning and preparation, and sticking to the plan. For David it all comes back to “plan what you spend, and spend what you plan.”

One other area critical to planning and spending is inviting God into our financial journeys. What Dave and Reb have discovered is that many people don’t talk to God about their financial challenges or struggles.

“This is a key factor in spending plans because God wants to give us His wisdom so we don’t get derailed by opportunities that we haven’t planned for,” Dave says. “God wants us to invite Him into every area of our lives and that includes finances!”

Listen to today’s show to find out what might be your budget busters, or spending plan triggers. Today’s show is sponsored by Financial Discipleship Canada and notmine.ca: a place to find resources and conversation about serving and loving God with our finances. Back to School

Back to School > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money,” Dave and Reb have their annual end-of-August conversation about preparing for back-to-school spending. In light of the global pandemic, they realize that this isn’t a “typical” financial year for families, but foundational principles for wise saving and spending still remain.
Dave reminds us to “plan what we spend and spend what we plan,” and also to pay attention to the needs of others around us. The simple kindergarten lesson of sharing what we have is just as important for adults as it is for children.
“Share what you have when you can, and ask for help when you need it,” Dave says.
Tune in and listen to today’s show sponsored by More Than Enough Financial, a financial coaching company encouraging people to walk in hope and freedom with God in their finances. Go to www.morethanenough.ca for more information. To receive encouragement on your sharing and giving journey, Dave and Reb recommend reading the book Gospel Patrons: People Whose Generosity Changed the World, written by John Rinehart. You can discover how to share what you have by becoming a gospel patron. Visit gospelpatrons.org for more information.

The Importance of Waiting

The Importance of Waiting > Dave and Reb are back from a few weeks off, and they are ready to talk money! On today’s podcast, they discuss the importance of waiting on the Lord, not only in financial matters, but in all areas of life. Taking the example of Abraham and Sarah from the book of Genesis, they look at how waiting on God for financial answers can keep us from complicating our lives.
Dave points out that making decisions in a hurry can lead to regret. Instead of succumbing to the hurry and rush around us, we want to discover the plan and wisdom God shows us as we wait.
“Speed kills, and that is as real in your finances as it is on the road,” Dave says. “We can make it more complicated, but God’s promises haven’t changed.”
Reb reminds us that there are many Scripture verses that encourage waiting, persevering, and being patient. James 5:7 says “Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.”
“This same patience is needed on our financial journeys,” Reb says.

Changing Conversations - encore

Changing Conversations - encore > Dave and Reb welcome back Dr. Keith Webb, founder and president of Creative Results Management, on today’s “Let’s Talk Money”. They continue their discussion about coaching, and how changing the conversation by listening and asking questions will change the results people see in their lives.
Dr. Webb says the coaches he trains and speaks to are encouraged to “draw out” what God is already speaking to people about.
“As coaches we want to help people reflect more deeply and find their own way,” he says. “It’s not advice giving or what I like to call ‘no-it-allism’.”
Clearly, his leadership training found in his book The Coach Model for Christian Leaders is practical in all kinds of relationships at work and at home. (https://keithwebb.com/coach-model/)
Questions like: “What is the result you are looking for?”, “How bad do you want that change?”, or “Can you tell me more about that?” are among the many questions we can ask people to show compassion and care, all the while “drawing out” what is inside of them.
Asking good questions can only come when we listen well. This is the other piece of coaching, changing conversations, and getting results that Dr. Webb talks about.
“People feel cared for when they are listened to,” Dr. Webb says. “If I feel heard, then I feel loved.”
To learn more about Dr. Webb, his book, and his ministry, go to creativeresultsmanagement.com, or keithwebb.com. Introducing Dr. Keith Webb - encore

Introducing Dr. Keith Webb - encore > Talking about financial coaching is one of Dave’s favourite things to do. Today on “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the co-hosts welcome Dr. Keith Webb to talk about coaching. Author of The Coaching Model for Christian Leaders, Dr. Webb is one of Dave’s coaching mentors – all because of the book he wrote.
Dr. Webb tells listeners that his inspiration from Scripture has been John 14:26: But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (NIV)
“As coaches we want to draw out what the Lord is telling people, instead of being advice-givers about what we think,” he says.
With his coaching model, he trains leaders to listen well, and ask questions, so that people discover how to think through their own journeys.
“We are helping people reflect more deeply, finding their own way,” he says.
Listen in to hear Dr. Webb’s story and how he created and developed a coaching model based on Scripture. Dr. Webb is the founder and president of Creative Results Management. You can learn more about Dr. Webb, his book, and his business and ministry, by going to creativeresultsmanagement.com or keithwebb.com.

Facing Change with Financial Coach and Author Natalie Rowe - encore

Facing Change with Financial Coach and Author Natalie Rowe - encore > Financial Coach and Author Natalie Rowe joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” today to encourage people in this pandemic environment, as they contemplate career transitions. In her book S.E.T. Proceed and Succeed in Your Career: Winning Perspectives for Career Navigation and Success, Natalie outlines tips and plans to help people navigate the way forward in career planning. She shares some of those on today’s show.
“During these times we need to step back from the noise and focus on what we can do,” Natalie says. “We all came to this earth with ‘start-up capital’ so to speak, and we can increase and multiply those talents and abilities in our lives and career transitions.”
A lot of what she has discovered on her journey evolves around changed and transformed thinking, where you silence those negative thoughts and anchor yourself to simple truth.
“We are co-creators with God,” she says. “And because of that we can pursue our lives with confidence, that help from God is guaranteed along the way.”
To hear more of their discussion, listen to the show. To contact Natalie for a career coaching session, please call More Than Enough Financial at 613-520-4157 or go to www.morethanenough.ca for more information.

It's Not About the Money with Rev. Ray Borg - encore

It's Not About the Money with Rev. Ray Borg - encore > Dave and Reb are taking a break from recording for a few weeks and are re-airing some of their favourites, and this show happens to be one of Rev. Ray Borg’s favourites! Happy summer and enjoy!
Rev. Ray Borg joins Dave and Reb in today’s discussion about God and mammon on their “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. In a book called It’s Not About the Money – unmasking mammon, Rev. Borg and colleague Jan Kupecz bring to light the words of Christ from Matthew 6:24 and Luke 16:13 warning people that you “cannot serve God and mammon.” On today’s show, Rev. Borg unpacks the meaning of “mammon” so we have a deeper grasp of what Jesus’ words mean for us in the 21st Century.
Mammon is a word that some people interchange with money, but it means much more than that. It is a word from ancient times with its origins in Aramaic, and long ago was an idol of worship. However, there are many more aspects to this entity, and Ray points out that mammon is the spirit of the world, which lies to us daily about what is important, what is to be valued and how we are to live our lives.
While their book identifies mammon and how it influences our culture, their focus is on discipleship and how stewardship is a part of our discipleship journey with Christ. Our financial journey isn’t about the money but about discipleship, and surrendering all that we are and all that we have to God.
“There are two main themes in the Bible: redemption and stewardship,” Ray says. “Redemption is God reaching out to save us and stewardship is our response.”
Dave believes that this is an important topic to discuss because it is not something people talk about, or even understand.
“What does Jesus mean when he says you cannot serve God and mammon?” he asks. “This question forces us to take a deep look at our lives and our bank accounts to see if what we say we believe is truly reflected in our active lives. Is our belief reflected in our stewardship?”
Tune in to listen to their discussion about these important questions. Go to notmine.ca to download a free copy of the book, or email info@notmine.ca with your name and address, to receive a free copy. Giving Cheerfully with Pastor Pam Dyck - encore

Giving Cheerfully with Pastor Pam Dyck - encore > It started out as a Facebook rant about the culture of giving in western Christian church culture and turned into an invitation to join Dave and Reb on today’s radio show “Let’s Talk Money”. Long-time friend and Pastor Pam Dyck from Abbotsford, B.C., joins Dave and Reb in a discussion about becoming cheerful givers, and how the western church has been shaping our ideas about giving to God.
“After reading Pam’s concerns about how we are asking people to give, I knew I wanted to have this discussion in person on the radio show,” Reb says.
Pastor Dyck explains that she is concerned “the church” is encouraging financial giving in a way that offers some kind of reward in return, like a membership with different tiers or levels of approval and recognition based solely on the amount of money people give.
“The Church or ministry no longer teaches or preaches, about asking God what to give, or that the act of giving and being obedient has its own reward with God,” she says.
In light of all that is happening in this global pandemic environment, Dave and Reb discuss this topic in hopes of encouraging listeners to seek God’s heart in their financial giving.
“We want to see people giving out of a heart of love for God and others, giving and sharing not just their finances, but their time, talent and other resources,” Reb says. “Giving is all about the heart, and is a journey of learning to become cheerfully selfless.”

Being Aware, Getting Started

Being Aware, Getting Started > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” podcast, Reb shares her writing journey and the obstacles she has faced in getting started. Awareness, commitment, and making a plan are not only a part of Reb’s journey, but they are a part of the journey to financial freedom. Getting started can sometimes be the biggest issue, so Dave encourages listeners to dig into the assets of relationships, time, opportunity, money and resources, as well as talents, to begin and continue on the financial freedom path.
“When you decide to start a project, or in this case, get out of debt or attain financial goals you haven’t had before, it is very important to be clear on what you have and what you have to work with,” Dave says.
Obedience to the Lord, and commitment to the journey are also essential.
“Knowing where you want to go, and sticking with it, are so important,” Reb says. “And having people around you who can encourage you when you get discouraged, insecure, or tired is also key. This keeps you on track in your commitment to what you have set out to do.”

Looking at Scriptures found in the books of Proverbs, Matthew, Ecclesiastes, and Exodus among others, Dave and Reb also get a chance to discover verses not so commonly known in their conversations around money.
“This is just a fun way to increase your knowledge around money, and also challenge what you think you actually know,” Reb says.
We won’t spoil the fun and tell you how David did, so listen to the podcast and think about having your own Biblical money quiz at home with friends and family.

Keeping Your Mortgage Sanity

Keeping Your Mortgage Sanity > Dave and Reb encourage listeners on “Let’s Talk Money” with some practical tips to keeping your sanity as you navigate this current real estate market in the Ottawa area, while at the same time remembering that throughout the uncertainties that this year has brought many people, there is security and peace in God’s plan for each of us.
Dave says that in this current market everyone is like a first time home buyer because none of us have navigated this season before. He encourages buyers to know their price, know their limitations and to seek peace in navigating the decisions before them.
“You can’t let the market make your decision for you,” he adds. “In the sanity of your preparation, don’t let the market push you into insanity.”

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day > Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada and notmine.ca joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” to encourage listeners to prepare for what lies ahead. “Carpe Diem” or “Seize the Day” were the words he used in a recent blog post reflected in today’s show.
“Time is short and planning is long,” Rev. Borg says.”How prepared are we financially for what tomorrow will bring us?”
Together, they look at the excuses, reasons and obstacles that keep us paralyzed from doing what we know needs to be done to bring us to a place of financial hope and freedom. To read his blog go to https://www.notmine.ca/how-financially-prepared-are-you.
“You can start by making a quality decision to do your money differently,” Dave says. “And having a community or accountability partner with you in those decisions is crucial.”

Don't Leave Your Post!

Don't Leave Your Post! > Reb tests Dave’s stewardship knowledge on today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” podcast. Looking at Jesus’ description from Luke 12, Dave summarises the qualities of a good steward, while Reb shares a story about a “not-so-good” steward from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
While Dave took liberties, and Reb thinks he cheated on the quiz because he used his phone, Dave did answer the questions of who and what makes a “good” steward based on the verses from Luke.
“A steward should know his position and his limitations,” Dave says. “It is also important that He knows the owner – the One who has left him in charge. A faithful steward will also be a leader who cares for others. A caring leader brings life and there is peace in the house.”
After looking at the character of Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, in Tolkien’s novel, Dave and Reb agreed that a “not-so-good” steward is a person who leaves his post and stops standing and leading, who forgets the battles and victories of the past, who no longer knows the king he serves, and sometimes stops caring about the responsibilities under his care.

Financial Wisdom in the Markets with Brent Vandermeer

Financial Wisdom in the Markets with Brent Vandermeer > Dave and Reb continue their conversation with Brent Vandermeer from Crosspoint Financial on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. Today they continue to talk about diversification and risk management, and understanding the true value of a business in today’s markets. In light of the wisdom spoken about in the book of James, they also look at what wisdom looks like as an investor navigating this pandemic environment.
Dave and Brent agree that motivations and purpose need to continue to be at the forefront of people’s decisions, because greed and fear can be vigilant adversaries to wisdom.
As it says in James 3:13-18: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”
Tune in to hear their conversation. Talking Markets with Brent Vandermeer

Talking Markets with Brent Vandermeer > Dave and Reb welcome Financial Advisor Brent Vandermeer of Crosspoint Financial to today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. Taking a look at the changing seasons talked about in the book of Ecclesiastes, they take a look back at the impact of the world pandemic on global markets and how the changing financial seasons are a part of the market’s history.
A quick collapse in March 2020 was followed by the fastest recovery observers had seen. So together, they dig into the details about how government policy accommodations have affected the recovery over the past year.
Listen to their discussion, as Brent helps listeners understand the past year, while encouraging them to “do good” to others in these changing times.
“I love the verse you read that says that nothing is better for us than to rejoice and do good in our lives,” Brent says. “And that is what we aim to do in our own personal lives and through our work at Crosspoint, just as you are aiming to do at More Than Enough.”

Let's Talk Real Estate 2021

Let's Talk Real Estate 2021 > It’s time to talk real estate with Ottawa area realtor Mark Wilson of the Royal Lepage Performance Realty Brokerage. Dave and Reb welcome their friend and colleague to take a bird’s eye view of what is happening in the Eastern Ontario market this spring. So much has been happening, and it certainly has been a seller’s market where homes have doubled in price in such a short period of time. As a mortgage broker, Dave agrees with Mark that it is important to have a good team behind you for wisdom and help in navigating the current real estate climate.
“The speed at which things are going to market has been phenomenal,” Mark says. “It is paramount that a buyer is tightly coupled with a mortgage broker to be well prepared in this climate of quick decisions, and so they know what their top threshold is.”
Dave agrees that there are a lot of moving pieces that they are navigating along with the buyers, so it is essential to work with a trusted team including a real estate agent, mortgage broker, and lawyer.
“Being as prepared as you can ahead of time is really important,” Dave says.
Tune in to listen to their discussion. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Rhythm in Giving with Ray Borg

Rhythm in Giving with Ray Borg > There is a rhythm in giving you can discover on your financial journey, and Dave and Reb explore this topic with regular guest Rev. Ray Borg on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. Together they look at giving as an act of worship, and how it is an expression of our own gratitude and love to God even as we give to others.
“Everything I have belongs to the Lord,” Rev. Borg says. “We give out of a sense of gratitude because the Lord has given us so much.”
They look at the giving Scriptures found in 2 Corinthians 9 where God admonishes us to decide what we want to give, and then give it cheerfully. “Remember: A stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop. I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, The Message)

No Roots of Bitterness

No Roots of Bitterness > Dave and Reb invite listeners to a conversation today on “Let’s Talk Money” that looks at a number of financial Biblical principles encouraging followers of Christ to unite in financial stewardship, instead of allowing roots of bitterness to rise and divide.
The truths they talk about include: financial needs as an opportunity to trust God, money as a tool given by God, generosity as a lifestyle, and Scripture, not culture, as a shaper of our financial perspectives. Their conversation flows from an internet blog by Daniel Darling. You can find it here: https://www.lifeway.com/en/articles/financial-facts-all-christians-should-know.
Dave and Reb want to encourage listeners to look at what they have in common in Christ’s teaching on finance, and not to let pride or lack of knowledge lead into judgment and shaming.
“We want to warn one another not to let roots of bitterness rise within us over financial teaching or behaviour,” Reb says.

More Kids Talks!

More Kids Talks !> Dave and Reb continue their “kid talk” conversation on “Let’s Talk Money” today. With the conversation that started last week with their daughter Serena, they dig a little deeper into some of the challenges around talking money with our kids. Dave continues to teach parents that so much of what we teach our kids isn’t by what we say, but by how we live. Tune in to hear their discussion. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Go to www.morethanenough.ca for more information.

Financial Fun with Kids!

Financial Fun with Kids! > Dave and Reb invite a very special guest to talk about money on today’s Let’s Talk Money podcast. Serena van Noppen, their almost 10-year-old daughter, shares her ideas about money and how to take care of what God has given us. She shares her thoughts as part of a discussion about how to talk with, and teach money to kids. It’s a question that Dave and Reb often get asked.
“So much of what our kids learn is from what they see us doing,” Dave says. “It’s not so much taught as caught.”
Serena tells listeners what she has learned from Dave and Reb during her 10 short years, and how the three jar system is a key to knowing where to put her money.
Listen in to hear their sweet and fun conversation with Serena, and invite your kids! You will learn how to talk about money and how to take care of the money we’ve been given as a gift from God.

Leaving Eternal Legacy

Leaving Eternal Legacy > On today’s Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb, there is continued conversation about sacrifice and freedom, and the need to consider the legacy we are leaving for our children and grandchildren.
Proverbs 13:22 says that “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.”
In today’s conversation, Dave and Reb talk about the financial, spiritual and relational legacies left by Jesus, our parents, and those who have gone before us.
“Jesus was intentional as he pursued the path of sacrifice,” Dave says. “The end result for Him was our freedom, and that was part of His legacy.”
Dave and Reb encourage listeners to think about the freedoms they experience and then thank those people who have sacrificed for that freedom. They also encourage listeners to consider the intentional decisions and actions they need to make to leave their own legacy of love and stewardship for their children’s children.

Focused by Love

Focused by Love > On this Good Friday morning, Dave and Reb of “Let’s Talk Money” welcome Rev. Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada to their discussion about the cost of spiritual and financial freedom. As Jesus was focused by the love of His Heavenly Father as He gave up His own will going to the Cross, so we too can live with this example at work within us. Together, they look at the attitudes of entitlement that threaten our financial freedom, as well as our ability to obey God’s financial principles.
Rev. Borg says Christ gave to us out of love, and He sacrificed out of love for His Father, and we can live the same way, especially in regards to our money.
“Surrendering our money to Him as worship is an act of love, and then leads us to be obedient in the midst of hardship,” Rev. Borg says.
Dave agrees that it is God’s love for us that keeps us focused on His financial Biblical principles, and helps us make the hard choices that are sometimes a part of the journey.
To hear more about the love that compels us, and the freedom found in sacrifice, listen to today’s show which is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. The Million Dollar Question

The Million Dollar Question > Many people are asking Dave and Reb of “Let’s Talk Money”, how their 20- and 30-year-old children will be able to afford a home in the Ottawa area, with the market the way it is. On today’s podcast, they dig into this topic focusing on a new way of thinking about what the days ahead may look like. Based on Romans 12:2, and the need to be renewed by transformed thinking, Dave and Reb challenge listeners with some practical ideas.
“We are hearing stories of how some young couples are living with their parents while they save for their down payment,” Reb says. “This may not be easy but if it moves you towards your goals, and may be something to consider.”
This kind of journey, and these kinds of choices take sacrifice.
“What are you willing to give up so that you can achieve your dreams?” Dave asks. “So much of the freedom and ability to fulfill our dreams depends on, or has depended, someone’s sacrifice, and these dreams may not come as easy to us anymore.”
While there are no easy answers, there are options to consider. Listen to hear their discussions and if you want to speak to a financial coach or mortgage agent to create a plan, email info@morethanenough.ca to make an appointment.

Changing Conversations

Changing Conversations > Dave and Reb welcome back Dr.
Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Go to www.morethanenough.ca to find out more about how financial coaching can change your life.

Introducing Dr. Keith Webb

Introducing Dr. Keith Webb >   Talking about financial coaching is one of Dave’s favourite things to do.

The Love of Money

The Love of Money >   Rev. Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada (notmine.ca) joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” today to talk about how the love of money affects our lives. Based on the letter written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, the passage from 1 Timothy 6 challenges God’s people to focus on righteousness, goodness, and sharing what we have, rather than focusing on the temporary rewards of money.
1 Timothy 6:6-10 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (NIV)
This love of money discussion is not an easy one, but Dave and Reb agree with Rev. Borg that it is about the posture of the heart and how we understand who we are, and who we understand God to be.
“When I think of love, I think of passion and longing, and how we are seduced,” Rev. Borg says. “The thing we love becomes the central focus.”
Reb says this issue of the heart around money and God is like walking a tightrope, because it is not always clear what is motivating us. Is it God or money? Tune in to hear more of their conversation as they unpack how contentment is a great litmus test for discovering if we are serving God or money.

Let's Talk Taxes

Let's Talk Taxes >   More Than Enough Tax Specialists Destiny Johnson and Bron Vasic join Dave and Reb on Let’s Talk Money this week to talk taxes! Together they encourage listeners to ‘get the ball rolling’, face your finances, and ask for advice in dealing with new Covid-19 compliance requirements.
“There are lots of little changes you just don’t want to miss through this process,” Destiny says.
They all agree that there are many variables to consider in this global pandemic year, including deductions for working from home.
“It is important to be proactive, and consider what you can do to prepare,” Bron adds.
Listen in to hear their discussion or contact the More Than Enough tax department with your questions by calling 613-520-4157. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Introducing Destiny

Introducing Destiny > Today on “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb speak with Destiny Johnson, the newest addition to the More Than Enough (MTE) Financial team. As a tax specialist and pastor, Destiny will not only look after your income tax questions and returns, but she will add a special note of pastoral care for anyone who asks.
“It took a year for Destiny to find us but it is such a great story of God’s leading that we are still amazed by how it happened,” Reb says.
As Destiny, Bron Vasic and Debbie Gallagher serve tax clients across the region of Eastern Ontario through the More Than Enough office, people will find that they are prayed for, cared for, and advocated for in ways that are needed in these uncertain times.
As one of Destiny’s key life verses states: “Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5 AMPC)
You won’t want to miss hearing Destiny’s story as she shares some of her journey with God, and how He led her to MTE. To make an appointment with Destiny, contact More Than Enough at info@morethanenough.ca or call the office at 613-520-4157. Let's Talk Money

Let's Talk Money > Yes, Dave and Reb are talking about “talking money” on today’s podcast, “Let’s Talk Money”! They uncover two important pieces of financial communication – processing money decisions and listening with care to one another.
On this Valentine’s Day podcast, they encourage listeners to remember the Scriptures that encourage people to speak carefully, kindly and wisely.
  •       Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger (see James 1:19)
  •      Don’t give an answer before you hear, otherwise it’s folly and shame (see Proverbs 18:13)
  •      A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver (see Proverbs 25:11)
Based on research by Shaunti and Jeff Feldhahn laid out in their latest book thriving in love & money, Dave and Reb share some of the Feldhahns’s findings, as well as relate their own personal stories of learning to become students of one another, and how, by doing so, they become better and better communicators.
Over the next three weeks, More Than Enough will be publishing Reb’s Processing and Listening articles on www.morethanenough.ca as she goes into further detail about how to process and listen effectively. Tune in to listen to the show, or link to the blogs to learn more.

Seek My Heart

Seek My Heart > “Seek My heart and not My hand” were the words from God that Dave and Reb hung onto in a year of economic uncertainty not so long ago. On today’s “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb tell a story from their personal and business journey of how they began to learn to seek God’s heart, even when provision seemed uncertain.
In a time of fatigue and lockdown, this message keeps ringing true for them, and they hope it will help and encourage listeners in their own financial and spiritual journeys through 2021.
“Change is tiring, but can be energizing for some,” Dave says. “Either way, the important piece to remember is that Jesus is inviting us to come to Him for rest and to learn from Him how we can navigate these times.”
These words apply to all aspects of our lives, including our finances.
“There is no formula in following God, or in getting a definitive blueprint for what will happen next,” Reb says. “What we do know is that He loves us, and He holds all things together, and He keeps inviting us to be with Him, to learn His rest in the midst of all that is happening.”

Let's Get Educated

Let's Get Educated > Rev. Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” today to talk about financial education and the importance of understanding the biblical principles behind financial stewardship. In a time when government spending is on the rise due to Covid-19 benefits, learning and gaining knowledge about God’s principles, along with emergency cushions and debt repayment, is crucial.
This is not the time to bury our heads in the sand, Dave advises.
“Break the barrier of silence in finances and find out what is happening in your own bank account,” he says.
According to some of the information circulating in the news and social media, one out of three Canadians took advantage of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit at a cost of over $80 billion. Over three million Canadians deferred credit card payments in 2020, and one out of six deferred mortgage payments.
“In light of these numbers, there is an even greater need for awareness, learning what God says in His Word, and building an emergency cushion,” Reb adds.
Tune in, to hear more of their conversation.

Getting More Light

Getting More Light > Today on “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb re-air a show from 2020 and talk about new lighting in their home, and the renovations that were necessary to make that happen. During their discussion, they draw the comparison between the work an electrician does to bring more light into your home, and the work a financial coach does to bring more light and freedom into your financial journey.
“It has been an interesting experience having Mark come into our home and add more light,” Reb says. “He has been saying for years that we need better lighting and I really didn’t understand until he added to our home, what was in his mind. It is so much like financial coaching. Sometimes we need others to shine light on what we don’t see, so that we can enjoy our lives and experience freedom in a new way.”
Speaking from first hand experience as coaches, Dave and Reb share their insights about having a coach you trust, someone who asks good questions, and who listens to your goals and dreams.
“It is so important to have the experience of someone who has been in the field and worked with wisdom and knowledge, walk beside you,” Dave says. “That is who Mark is for us, and that is who we are as financial coaches for others.”

Wait on the Lord

Wait on the Lord > In this time of global pandemic and economic uncertainty, Dave and Reb encourage listeners today on “Let’s Talk Money” to seek the Lord, as they wait on Him for financial and personal direction.
“There is this interesting aspect to waiting, where we seek Him while we wait,” Dave says. “It is in the waiting and the seeking that we discover more of Him and His purpose for our lives, and that is so important in this time of uncertainty.”
At the beginning of this New Year, Dave and Reb encourage listeners with the words of Jesus from John 14:1, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”
“We want listeners to be encouraged by the words of Christ that we can find peace, comfort and help by coming to Him,” Reb says. “Psalm 34 says that the righteous cry out and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.”
Waiting and listening, seeking and finding God on our 2021 journeys are key elements to navigating our finances. Tune in to hear more of their thoughts and stories about waiting on the Lord.

Digging Deep in 2021

Digging Deep in 2021 > In this morning’s looking back and looking forward “Let’s Talk Money” podcast episode, Dave and Reb speak with Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada about the depth that God has built in their lives and in their finances in 2020. They also look into the uncertain year ahead and the need to continue to “dig deep”.
“We want to dig wells, so to speak, that access the fresh, flowing and pure nourishment of Christ,” Reb says. “Jesus calls Himself the fountain of living water, and we can come to Him and drink freely.”
Looking at passages found in Luke 6, Genesis 26, and Jeremiah 2, Dave, Reb, and Rev. Ray encourage listeners to come to Christ no matter the circumstances, to find the help needed in the year ahead.
“Spending time with God and inviting him into your financial journey, is a part of drinking from God’s well that never runs dry,” Dave adds.
Listen in to hear their discussion, encouraging you to build your emotional, spiritual and financial lives on the foundation of Christ.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas > On “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb don’t talk money or the heart issues around money for the first time in 2020! Wishing listeners a Merry Christmas, they direct listeners to Behold Jesus and His glory as they celebrate His birth. Intermingling Scriptures with contemporary Christian music, Dave and Reb hope to point you to Christ on this podcast.
“We want to behold His love for us today,” Dave says. “But I wonder – has the story of Christmas lost its mystery? Has it been swallowed up – even on this glorious morning – in the fears of 2020, and the efforts to bring light into our weary lives? Then behold Him on this morning of joy. Come and behold Him. His glory. Behold and awaken to His glory, His light, His love, His Kingship and His majesty.”
Isaiah 9 gives us all such hope on this Christmas morning, Reb adds.
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest…For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
On this Christmas morning, Dave and Reb thank God for His faithfulness, as well as listeners and clients for their support throughout the year.

Growing in Giving with Tim Jenkins

Growing in Giving with Tim Jenkins > Financial Advisor Tim Jenkins joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” today encouraging listeners to grow in their giving in 2021.
“No matter where we are, on the giving journey, we need to understand the obstacles that get in the way of giving,” Reb says. “Our egos, our fear, and our insecurities all play apart in keeping us holding tightly to our money.”
Understanding that God is our provider is also a key factor in learning how to give and what to give.
“The question we need to ask is ‘Father, how would you want us to use your money?’” Tim says. “We need to consider this: what do we have that we haven’t been given?”
Giving is always a place for growth.
“I know many, many generous people but I’ve never seen anyone become less generous,” Tim says. “People just continue to be more and more generous.”

Delayed Gratification

Delayed Gratification > On today’s show, Dave and Reb talk about the importance of waiting to experience delayed gratification not only in our financial journeys, but our walks with God as well. Access to credit has made it easier to make purchases immediately, without the need to tuck money away for that desired item.
Today, they talk about the importance of waiting and delaying purchases, especially as they see and understand that principle of waiting on the Lord laid out so often in God’s Word.
“God teaches us in the book of Isaiah that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint,” Reb says. “These verses are key in helping us slow down and look to God before we make a purchase that can get us into trouble financially.”
Dave describes a 24-hour rule that he and Reb use in their home.
“Before we make a purchase over $100 we talk about it, and we wait, even just a simple 24 hours, to see if it is really something we would use or find value in,” Dave says. “It has helped us on many occasions, and when we haven’t used that rule or talked together about bigger purchases, it has sometimes brought us some difficulties that we have had to navigate.”
Listen in to hear more of their conversation, and the valuable Scriptures they share, that can help you on your financial journey of delaying gratification. Getting More Light

Getting More Light > Today on “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb talk about new lighting in their home, and the renovations that were necessary to make that happen.

Pivoting Crisis with Pastor Mike Hogeboom

Pivoting Crisis with Pastor Mike Hogeboom > On “Let’s Talk Money” today, Dave and Reb talk with Pastor Mike Hogeboom from Ottawa’s Arlington Woods Free Methodist Church about how they have responded in this time of Covid-19. Two years ago, Arlington Woods church took on damage from the area’s infamous tornado storms. Pastor Mike shares how what they learned as a church in that crisis, prepared them to pivot in this year of 2020.
“That fall of 2018 was devastating to say the least,” Pastor Mike says. “We had damage to our facility that we had to figure out, but we also learned to rise to the need in our community that was around us. It helped us mobilize better as a church.”
He mentioned that out of the 2018 crisis, Respond Ottawa formed, mobilizing churches to meet the needs of the city of Ottawa especially in crisis. In 2020, this network was able to form the Covid 19 Task Force. Go to http://www.respondottawa.ca/ for more information.
“There are so many hard things that people are experiencing, but we also need to see all the positives that come out of times such as these,” Reb says. “Respond Ottawa is such a great example.”
Listen in to hear more of Pastor Mike’s stories. Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial – a financial coaching, tax and mortgage company helping people find hope and freedom in their finances one day at a time. Go to www.morethanenough.ca for more information.

Awe and Wonder with Rev. Ray Borg

Awe and Wonder with Rev. Ray Borg > Christmas season is upon us and advent is just around the corner. On “Let’s Talk Money” today, Dave and Reb invite Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada (FDC) to discuss the story of the three wise men found in Matthew 2. Together they ponder what kind of gifts we can bring to Jesus this Advent season, in the midst of a year of challenges and difficulties.
“When I was thinking about this podcast and the story of the wise men, I was thinking about the Christmas pageants our kids loved to be in when they were young,” Reb says. “I started to wonder what part each of us could play in the pageant of Christ’s coming. Would I be more like the wise men in seeking Christ, or more like Herod as a self-seeking, fearful king?”
While we all may say we want to be like the wise men, how we live that out is more challenging.
“In taking the role of a wise man and pursuing Jesus, our hearts are more and more open to love and give to others,” Dave says. “This is an important piece to Christmas this year, especially when there is so much need around us.”
The wise men had their own obstacles to overcome on their journey to the Christ-child, but they persevered because of the calling, the gifts, and their passionate desire to see the baby king. Listen in and open your hearts to God’s calling for you this Advent season.

Review, Reflect, Resolve with Bron Vasic

Review, Reflect, Resolve with Bron Vasic > Dave and Reb continue their discussion with More Than Enough Entrepreneurial Coach Bron Vasic on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. They reinforce the need for planning in your personal and business lives, by reviewing, reflecting and resolving to act. They talk about entrepreneurial passion and how running your own business is more than just living for the bottom line.
“Take stock of where you are at,” Bron says, adding that in this Covid-19 environment adapting to change is so important.
Dave agrees that diversity and passion are so important in our reviewing, reflecting and resolving to act.
“It is to keep doing what we are doing AND create other avenues for our business that can be a path for our passion while generating income,” he says.
In all of these considerations, Bron emphasizes the importance of walking with God, and inviting Him to do business with you.
“We can ask ourselves every day, ‘what is the glory that God wants me to experience’ on this business journey I am endeavouring to follow,” he says.

Tax Season Preparation with Bron Vasic

Tax Season Preparation with Bron Vasic > In this unprecedented year of change that is 2020, Dave and Reb invite tax and entrepreneurial coaching specialist Bron Vasic to talk about CERB and preparing for the tax season on “Let’s Talk Money”. Together, they look at the importance of living in the moment with God, doing what needs to be done today, and tackling tax preparation one day at a time.
Inspired by the words of Jesus in Matthew 6, and the writing of Henri Nouwen in his book In the Name of Jesus, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to do what is in front of them to do, today. It is in the daily, moment-by-moment living with God that the way is paved for the future.
Henri Nouwen writes: I also came to see that I should not worry about tomorrow, next week, next year, or the next century. The more willing I was to look honestly at what I was thinking and saying and doing now, the more easily I would come into touch with the movement of God’s Spirit in me, leading me to the future. God is a God of the present and reveals to those who are willing to listen carefully to the moment in which they live the steps they are to take toward the future. “Do not worry about tomorrow,” Jesus says. “Tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34) (Nouwen, In the Name of Jesus p.13)
In terms of preparing for taxes, this is also wise advise.
“Start collecting documents, start organizing them into categories, so that you are not caught off guard in March,” Dave says. “If you do a bit every day it will take the pressure off of your tomorrow.”

The Rich Man and Lazarus

The Rich Man and Lazarus > Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada once again joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” to discuss one of the stories Jesus told that centres on the heart issues around money. Found in Luke 16, Jesus tells the story of the poor man Lazarus and the rich man who neglected him, revealing how the love of money can distort our Kingdom perceptions.
“This is a story that gets to the heart issue of what God values,” Reb says. “He cares about the poor, the lonely, the widow, the orphan, and we, as His people can be blinded by the needs around us because of our comforts and wealth.”
“This is not an easy teaching, but we must yield to it, as it is a matter of eternal significance.”
Dave reminds us that this is a story of understanding our own need for God and others, and how the Kingdom priorities don’t always align with the way the world does things.

Choosing Faith with Tim Jenkins

Choosing Faith with Tim Jenkins > Today on “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb welcome financial planner Tim Jenkins back for a second week in a row to talk about the importance of choosing faith over irrational thought in these unprecedented times. Together, they look at the Scriptures that can encourage us to keep focused on the Provider of our lives and livelihoods, and not on fear.
“It is saying to ourselves and to God – ‘Jesus, I trust You. Father, I trust you’. I give all of these worries to you,” Tim says. “The focus needs to be on God our Provider, not on our fear.”
They agree that fear is natural to experience, especially with so many health and financial concerns in this global pandemic, but it is what we do with the fear that affects our lives for the better or for the worse.
Tune in and listen to their conversation.

Importance of a Financial Plan

Importance of a Financial Plan > Dave and Reb welcome financial planner Tim Jenkins to “Let’s Talk Money” this morning to discuss the importance of a financial plan that gives structure, perspective and balance to understanding one’s financial journey. He shares the journey he has had personally over the past six months during the pandemic, as well as how Trinity Family Wealth Advisors has navigated this season.
Together they talk about the value of having a financial planner you can trust, as well as a plan that reflects that trust, especially in these unprecedented times.
“Having a plan is about not allowing a short term event like we are experiencing to sidetrack our long terms plans,” Tim says.

Don't Lose Heart

Don't Lose Heart > In such uncertain times, Dave and Reb encourage listeners this morning on “Let’s Talk Money” to dig into the promises of God, and become aware of what is happening in their finances.
Looking at 2 Corinthians 4, they remind us not to lose heart because of God’s ministry to us, and also, the hope of our ministry to others. When so much seems impossible, God encourages each of us to look up and remember that though we may be hard pressed and feeling crushed on every side, we are not abandoned.
“The Scripture says that we carry His light and treasure within us as jars of clay,” Dave says. “Remember, God doesn’t leave us to do this on our own.”
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” 2 Corinthians 4:7-10.
“It is so important to encourage ourselves, and each other, to remember that no matter what 2020 has brought to us, God still has us, knows us, and invites us to journey with Him, so that we not only get through, but we shine as we do so,” Reb says.
While this may be easier some days, than others, Dave and Reb want to encourage listeners to keep seeking after God, while at the same time, keep tracking and paying attention to finances.
“It is so important to face your finances and know your debt level, your goals, your income, and so much more,” Dave says. “We don’t want to see anyone caught off guard these days because they have their head in the sand and don’t know what is going on in their bank account.”
Grab your coffee and your Bible, and take a listen. Look up and find your heart encouraged. Today’s podcast is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial, the Ottawa-based financial coaching company bringing hope and freedom into people’s finances. Planning Ahead

Planning Ahead > Now that we have accepted summer is over, Dave and Reb tackle the topic of planning ahead on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast. Christmas is exactly three months away, and they dive into what this winter celebration might look like especially in light of changing financial realities.
“It is never too soon to plan for Christmas, so that you and your family can celebrate without worrying about credit card bills,” Dave says.
One of the practical steps they suggest is putting money away every month for Christmas expenditures so that there is no surprise or huge credit card bills to pay off in the new year.
“Sometimes we act like Christmas is an emergency – taking us by surprise,” but just like car repairs we know what it looks like at the end of every year,” Reb says.
Planning ahead isn’t only about Christmas, but intentionally being mindful of your finances and what is happening in your bank account and investments, on a day-to-day basis. Listen in, and remind yourself to plan ahead and stick to the plan.

More Than Enough Oil

More Than Enough Oil > On today’s podcast, Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada and notmine.ca leads Dave and Reb in a discussion of a beautiful Old Testament story of care, love and provision that has a lot of principles to encourage listeners today. The story of Elisha and the widow with the jars of oil reflects God’s heart for us, and together they unpack the faith, trust, community, and desperation found there.
“The story found in 2 Kings, is a great example we can dig into, and learn from,” Dave says.
In this story, the widow with two sons, seeks Elisha’s help as the prophet of God. She desires a word from God as she is desperate to be freed from debt so she won’t need to sell her sons into slavery. The word Elisha speaks, she obeys. She finds the help she needs, and God asks her to use what she has to accomplish his purpose.
“This is a story of grief and hope, seeking and asking, believing and acting out of that faith,” Reb says. “It is an example to us, of how we can suffer in our circumstances, but still find God with us, and willing to lead us to find answers we need.”

Unleashed Perspectives with Guest Sandy Kingston

Unleashed Perspectives with Guest Sandy Kingston > Dave and Reb welcome More Than Enough (MTE) Coaching Client Sandy Kingston to today’s podcast “Let’s Talk Money” to talk about being unleashed from debt. She shares about the benefits she received from the year-long MTE Coaching workshops called Unleashed, alongside her monthly one-on-one coaching sessions.
“Unleashed opened a channel through which God’s grace could flow,” she says. “Through showing up to the Unleashed sessions, doing the work that was asked and by following the guidance of my financial advisor, my perceptions around money and spending have miraculously started to change. The change in perception is an important piece because without that, my old thinking would continue to take me back into debt. My new perception around money is now more in line with how God would have me think and shows up in what He would have me do.”
The More Than Enough Unleashed workshops are offered online – in conjunction with one-on-one coaching – once a month, and deal with the heart of issues of money, like purpose, commitment, understanding your past, as well as dealing with envy, comparing, and learning contentment.
“You may not believe it, but money is about so much more than just numbers,” Reb says. “If it was just about the numbers no one would be in debt. In our Unleashed sessions, we address so many other things that are influencing our financial habits and money stories.”

Coaching at More Than Enough

Coaching at More Than Enough > At a time when people are grappling with many economic and financial situations in their families and homes, Dave and Reb thought it would be timely to talk about the Financial Coaching offered by More Than Enough Financial. On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, they explain why coaching is about more than just getting out of debt.

“Every day we have a choice of living debt free, but there are so many factors in our lives that can lead us in the opposite direction,” Reb says. “Sometimes you need someone to walk alongside you who will show you the good path and cheer you along the way.”

More Than Enough Coaching is just the place you will find both practical help and spiritual direction as you not only dig into the practical handling of money, but the heart issues around money.

“We know that financial issues are not really about the money, but the thoughts and beliefs in our minds and hearts,” Dave says. “Our coaching workshop called Unleashed helps people stop long enough to take an honest look at their actions and motives around finances.”

To hear their conversation tune in, or go to www.morethanenough.ca to find out about the different financial coaching programs they offer.

Default to Love

Default to Love > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, the podcast co-hosts talk about returning to the essential issue of loving God, and how that manifests in our finances. Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada (FDC) joins the discussion based on Revelation 2 verses 1 to 7.
As God’s people, we are called to remember our first love, turn back to Him through repentance, and do what we were doing at first in our relationship with God. Their discussion looks at how turning back to God like this can affect people’s lives, including their money stories.
“Journeying with God isn’t just about ticking off all the boxes,” Dave says. “It’s about love in relationship, communion, communication, and growing together.”
Rev. Borg agrees, and suggests asking questions that would bring us back to the heart of God.
“For instance, on your next financial date, ask God questions like ‘what would give You joy, Father God, in our giving, in how we give, and where’?”
Tune in to the show to hear more of their conversation.

Know Your Season

Know Your Season > As the author of Ecclasiastes wrote so long ago, there is a time for everything under the sun, and knowing what season we are walking in today, is an important part of understanding our present spiritual and financial journeys.
On today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast, Dave and Reb talk through some of the current events happening this week around the world, as well as how people are starting to re-evaluate and adjust their goals, values and plans based on these events and the season we find ourselves in. In a recent Daily Herald Tribune online article, Wealth Advisor Ted Rechtshaffen calls this life reflection “Covidflecting”
“Knowing the season we are walking in is so important,” Reb says. “For everything there is a season, and as we come to understand those seasons of growth or loss, birth or death, planting or reaping, we are able to navigate our financial journey accordingly. Perhaps now is the time to store away into savings accounts for the future, or maybe now is the time to use what we have been saving.”
Seeking wisdom from God as to how to navigate career change, travel, education, and living arrangements in this global pandemic environment is part of what we need to consider and evaluate.
“Asking God for wisdom for the next steps we are going through – individually and as community – is so important,” Dave says.

Why Do I Hate Money?

Why Do I Hate Money? > If some of you are feeling like money is a “necessary evil” and you don’t know why you feel hatred towards it, then today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” is the podcast for you. Together, they discuss the heart issues around this attitude, and how it may be driving you to avoid your finances. They offer some tips like lament and gratitude, to help you face your finances with hope.
“As we often say at More Than Enough – it’s not about the money,” Reb says. “It is often about our behaviour, our communication, our relationship to money from past history, that causes us to feel such strong emotions. Really, I think there is more going on than just hating money.”
Dave and Reb know the feelings and attitudes are real, and try to offer some tips to help you move past those negative emotions into a place where you can face your finances.
They suggest a time of lament or venting – but in a healthy place to people you trust. Add to that “saying thanks” to God for all you are and all you have.
“Regular expression of gratitude is an awesome tool and practise to move us into a new place of insight,” Reb says. “Writing down what you are thankful for every day is a good start.”
In today’s show, Dave and Reb reference an article by Kristin Wong entitled “How to manage Money When You Hate Money”. https://www.kristinwong.com/how-to-manage-money-when-you-hate-money/

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl  > Pastor Ray Borg joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” today to talk about two Kingdom of Heaven parables that Jesus gave to His disciples. Found in Mathew 13:44-46, together they discuss the significance of these stories from Jesus’ perspective, as well as ours.
“The man in the parable sold all he had when he discovered the hidden treasure, and he did it with joy,” Reb says. “That really stands out to me, that what we do or give for the kingdom isn’t a hardship but joy because of what we gain in relationship with God and others.”
Pastor Ray, Ministry Liaison for Financial Discipleship Canada agrees. There is a shift in focus from what we “give up for God” to what we gain as we pursue the Kingdom of God.
“It is the joy of discovery in the Kingdom of God, as we release ourselves to God,” he says.
These parables also speak to how Jesus pursued the Kingdom of Heaven, as He gave up His life to pursue us – His people.
“We are the pearls of great price, and the hidden treasures,” Reb says. “What He gave to find me, love me, and save me, just makes me want to offer myself to Him in return.”
Tune in to hear their discussion.

Do the Next Right Thing

Do the Next Right Thing  > On today’s show, Dave and Reb take a quick look at some of the changes occurring in the Ottawa area due to the continuing Covid-19 restrictions. From wearing masks to buying houses, they talk about the need for thoughtful and strategic responses in these challenging days. Dave suggests that in light of our relationship with God who loves us, we can make wise daily decisions that allow us “to do the next right thing”.
“Doing the next right thing” means including God in our financial decision making process, through prayer and time spent reading His Word.
“Make the next right decision today in light of your relationship with God, and in light of His Word,” Dave says. “That is why we have Scriptures read at the beginning of these podcasts. We need the truth for discernment in the decisions we are making today, because we simply don’t know what tomorrow holds.”
Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 6 that they should not worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Dave and Reb encourage listeners to take one day at a time, being thoughtful and strategic, as opposed to reactionary in their current financial realities.
“God has this,” Reb says, referring to the challenges we are facing. “And He wants us to trust Him every step of the way – one step at a time.”
Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial, a financial coaching company leading people to financial hope and freedom through consistent coaching and accountability. Go to www.morethanenough.ca for more information. To read Reb’s blog about “doing the next right thing” click on this link.

Cash or Cashless?

Cash or Cashless?  > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb” podcast, they look at how our Covid-19 lockdown has influenced our growing use of online shopping, online payments, mobile pay, credit cards and debit cards.
From recent media reports, the first five weeks of lockdown showed a reduction in Canadian spending by 75 per cent, with a drop in use of cash by 62 per cent, while the use of other money tools was on the rise, compared to the pre-Covid spending behaviours.      “While more places are refusing cash at this point in time, it doesn’t mean we are going completely cashless,” Reb says. “It just seems that we are using more money tools that exist side-by-side.”
Dave wants to remind Canadians that whatever way we pay for things, whether cash, plastic or mobile pay, we need to be aware of what we are spending and whether or not we have an overall awareness of our financial current reality.
“Awareness and connection to our finances is critical, especially when paying on credit has been so easy to do,” Dave says. “If we are not aware of our cashflow, expenditures and income, we could get into trouble very fast.”

First Steps to Financial Health

First Steps to Financial Health  > What do you do when you know something needs to change in your finances but you don’t know where to start? On today’s “Let’s Talk Money” podcast, Dave and Reb offer a whirlwind of advice, but bottom line is: don’t be lazy, think about your purpose, and build an emergency cushion!
Dave and Reb agree that laziness is not always the reason for financial trouble, but it is something that they don’t always talk about.
“The journey of 1000 miles takes just one starting step,” Dave says. “And identifying some barriers of laziness in our lives can be an important first step.”
While identifying laziness as an issue, Dave and Reb also talk about the importance of having and knowing your purpose or goals.
“Purpose is the antidote to laziness in your financial journey,” Dave says.
But what about a practical first-step on your money journey? Dave and Reb agree that building an emergency cushion will get you on the right track, so that you don’t need to rely on credit when emergencies arise.

Celebrating Financial Victories

Celebrating Financial Victories  > Happy 153rd birthday to Canada!
We are only a few days from Canada Day, and it is the first time in many years that we are not celebrating our national birthday on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill. Let’s hope that the cancellation of that big celebration won’t keep us from celebrating in our backyards!
Celebration is important, and especially celebrating Canada Day, but so also is celebrating our financial milestones and victories. On today’s “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb talk about the importance of celebrating financial goals in our journeys to debt-free living.
“Celebration not only instills meaning in our lives, but it also helps us stay focused on our financial goals,” Reb says.
In centuries past, celebrating was built into community living to encourage relationship, joy, thankfulness and significance in every day lives.
“It helps us remember over and over again, the milestones we have accomplished but also the gifts we are given every day,” Dave says.

Asking for Help with Pastor Pam Dyck

Asking for Help with Pastor Pam Dyck  > Dave and Reb welcome Abbotsford Pastor Pam Dyck back for the second week in a row on “Let’s Talk Money”. On today’s show they talk about the importance of asking for help, and how our pride can keep us from asking.
Pastor Pam says that people feel awkward or embarrassed sharing their need, but it is important to open up.
“We certainly aren’t mind-readers when it comes to knowing what others need,” she says laughing. “And we want to give to you because we care for you, not because we think you are ‘needy’.
James 4 tells us that we don’t have because we don’t ask. Jesus spoke to His disciples, about asking, seeking, and knocking. This is a timely discussion for the Body of Christ as economic uncertainty has hit so many Canadians close to home.
“We need to share what we have,” Reb says. “But we also need to share what needs we have with others so they can be a part of God’s provision for us.”
Reb believes that this is how we are going to walk successfully through some of the economic uncertainty ahead.
“If you need a hammer, an axe or a shovel for a job around the house, just ask to borrow one for the day from someone who may have them,” she says. “There is no shame in asking for help.”

Giving Cheerfully with Pastor Pam Dyck

Giving Cheerfully with Pastor Pam Dyck  > It started out as a Facebook rant about the culture of giving in western Christian church culture and turned into an invitation to join Dave and Reb on today’s radio show “Let’s Talk Money”.

Update from Financial Discipleship Canada with Guest Ray Borg

Update from Financial Discipleship Canada with Guest Ray Borg > Dave and Reb speak to regular guest Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada (FDC) on today’s “Let’s Talk Money” to get an update on what FDC is hearing and seeing across the nation in this time of Covid-19.
FDC is a family of ministries connecting finances with discipleship, and part of what they do is offer group studies and training through Compass Canada. As part of the online universe we are now living in, they have put one of their studies online so churches can remain engaged with their members in financial and stewardship learning and growth.
Dave and Reb also share how More Than Enough has been shifting and adapting in these changing times.
“Our Financial Fitness Seminar, and some of our coaching workshops have gone completely online,” Dave says. “While the technology can be unpredictable it is opening opportunities we otherwise would not be having right now.”
They also talk about how the church across Canada is reflecting the heart, worship and prayer of the first New Testament church. While it doesn’t look exactly the same, especially as society is physically-distancing, the church is awakening to these changing situations.
To hear some of the stories, listen to the show. Or to get more information on what FDC is offering online, go to financialdiscipleship.ca, or notmine.ca. If you have any questions around Covid-19 and your finances, please connect with the staff at More Than Enough by calling 613-520-4157 or email info@morethanenough.ca

Creating the New Normal

Creating the New Normal > The “new normal” seems to be a catch phrase for these days of adjustment to an environment of physical distancing. On today’s “Let’s Talk Money” show, Dave and Reb look at ways of intentionally creating a “new normal” in your finances especially in how Covid-19 and the lock-downs have affected so much of our personal lives and global economy.
But even with the circumstances changing, they want to encourage listeners that Biblical principles still hold true, as do wise financial spending and savings practises.
“Our circumstances have certainly changed in many, many cases,” Dave says. “But God’s word and biblical financial principles were true before the pandemic and still are true now.”
They encourage listeners to prayerfully consider their situation and bring their requests and petitions to God.
“Creating your new normal in your life and finances may mean not doing activities you once did because you no longer have the money,” Reb says. “But perhaps your new normal will be giving more as you recognize more people in need.”
“What your life looks like going forward will not likely look like it did, and it won’t necessarily look like your neighbours either.”

Tax Compliance and COVID-19 with MTE Coach Bron Vasic

Tax Compliance and COVID-19 with MTE Coach Bron Vasic > On today’s “Let’s Talk Money” show, Dave and Reb get an update from More Than Enough Coach and Tax Specialist Bron Vasic regarding the current tax season and how Covid-19 has changed deadlines and attitudes at Canada Revenue Agency. It certainly is an unprecedented financial tax season in Canada, and together they talk about the importance of being compliant with income tax return, especially now.
“The folks at CRA are helpful and understanding for the enquiries they are receiving, so if you are having any trouble it’s important to reach out to them, even if you need to wait on the phone,” Bron says.
Bron says that many good changes have taken place this year amidst the Covid-19 challenges. People seem to be filing their taxes sooner and meeting deadlines so cash flow comes through to help them through this uncertain time.
“There is more patience by CRA on matters as well, and a more helpful tone in calling CRA, alongside more practicality and helping each other out,” he adds.

Giving our All with Guest Rev. Ray Borg

Giving our All with Guest Rev. Ray Borg > On today’s show, Dave and Reb speak with Rev. Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada and notmine.ca about the meaning and context of the story of the widow who gave all she had in the temple courts. Recording before mid-March and the Covid-19 pandemic, Dave and Reb and the team at More Than Enough wanted to share the insights from this conversation, continuing to follow their monthly theme of parables and stories Jesus told.
They read from the story found in Luke 21, when Jesus, in the middle of the teaching and warning he gives about the religious leaders who “devour widow’s houses”, looks up and sees a widow giving her two copper coins. Juxtaposed against her giving is the rich man giving his offering.
In verse 3 Jesus says, “Truly I tell you…this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
The rich man gave out of his wealth, but Jesus says the widow gave even more, by giving all she had. Together, Dave and Reb discuss with Ray what that looks like for each of us today in the context of our western society.
They agree that the disciples, to whom Jesus was speaking, seem to have missed the point of what Jesus was trying to show them. The disciples seem so focused on the beauty of the temple itself, they miss the beauty of the widow and her gift.

Facing the Storm

Facing the Storm > Dave and Reb encourage listeners on “Let’s Talk Money” this morning with truth from God’s Word found in Matthew 11, Psalm 121 and Jeremiah 17. In the storm that these pandemic days are creating, they are encouraging people to look to God, and face their financial situations by putting their hands back on the wheel of their financial journeys.
Dave compares the storms of our current circumstances to the storms that captains face on the open seas.
“Some of us may be facing the storm by going to the bottom of the ship and curling up in a ball because we just are struggling so much on various emotional and physical levels,” he says. “But I just want to encourage you to get up to the main deck and get your hands on the wheel of your finances, even if all you do right now is tie yourself to the wheel and stand there and hang on.”
In a practical sense, they want people to understand the income and expenses they have each month, so they can figure out if they have enough money to pay the bills.
“On top of that, if you are able, you keep pointing your ship in the direction of debt repayment,” Reb says. “Even if you are only putting $20 toward your debt, you are still directing your ship in the direction of your goals and purposes.”

Hope Amidst COVID-19 with Debbie Doyle

Hope Amidst COVID-19 with Debbie Doyle > Credit Counsellor Debbie Doyle from Doyle Salewski Inc., Licensed Insolvency Trustee, speaks with Dave and Reb on Let’s Talk Money today and shares the journey they have been on with Canadians struggling with debt, in this time of Covid -19, physical distancing, and economic slow-down.
On today’s show she shares how 2020 has been both the busiest of times (pre-pandemic) and the slowest of times (post-pandemic lockdown) for their financial counselling and restructuring services business.
In this time of economic uncertainty, Debbie and David both agree that it is the right time for people to get a good look at their finances.
“Right now people are being given the opportunity to examine their financial situation in a calm way because creditors have backed off,” she says.
Debbie recommends that people need to prayerfully look at their finances during this time, and if people are in trouble financially, they need to consider talking to financial coaches, advisors or licensed insolvency trustees to develop a plan going forward.
Dave and Reb both agree that praying over your finances is essential.
“This is a really important part of the puzzle, so that in the event things don’t go the way people are anticipating, they will have a plan coming out of the pandemic lockdown,” Dave says.
Tune in and listen to their discussion, and hear why Debbie Doyle has such hope in this season of adversity. If you would like to reach Doyle Salewski to talk to a trustee, please go to doylesalewski.ca. If you have any other questions regarding what you heard this morning, or have any other financial concerns, go to www.morethanenough.ca, or listen to Dave and Reb’s live QandA on Facebook, Friday mornings at 10 a.m. Just go to https://www.facebook.com/MoreThanEnoughFinancial/.

Real Estate Update with Mark Wilson

Real Estate Update with Mark Wilson > In an effort to keep up with what is happening in the housing market, Dave and Reb speak with Mark Wilson from Royal Lepage Performance Realty on today’s podcast. With the coming of Covid-19 and the economic slowdown that has resulted, the housing market took a noticeable shift in the National Capital Region.
January and February saw record prices compared to the same months in 2019, and even March was up 16 per cent over March 2019.
“Right up until March 18th we were in a full blown seller’s market, but that day our world changed,” Mark says. “But understand the market has changed, it hasn’t plummeted.”
Houses are still selling, and it remains a seller’s market, according to Mark, but many buyers are stepping back to keep safe. According to what both Dave and Mark are seeing in the mortgage and real estate markets, people are waiting to put their homes up for sale until they see what happens as the lockdown continues.
“Right now there is less competition and there is decreasing inventory because people are taking their houses off the market,” Mark says.
People are also changing how they are looking at homes and making offers. While Pre-Covid, the market was frantic, with many offers on a home, and homes selling over asking price, the process has slowed down considerably.
“The blessing now is that people have become more thoughtful as the process has slowed down, and they are not rushing into a purchase,” Mark says.
Listen to today’s show to learn about buying and selling in the National Capital Region during these unprecedented times.

Responsible Borrowing with Susanna Penning

Responsible Borrowing with Susanna Penning > “You qualify!” Those may be the words you long to hear when looking to buy a home, but on today’s show mortgage agents David van Noppen and Susanna Penning discuss why the words “Yes, you can afford it!” are the ones you really want to hear!
Together with Reb, they discuss the influence of greed on home purchases, and how in today’s real estate market, people need to consider long-term dreams and lifestyle goals so that a mortgage doesn’t drain those pursuits.
“People may need to scale back their wants in terms of house purchases, if they take an honest look at their dreams and goals over the long term,” Dave says. “A home purchase is the biggest financial decision some people will make and they need to take it seriously, by looking at all kinds of factors, not just whether or not they ‘qualify’.”
A home purchase is an asset and is one of the ways that people build up equity.
“You don’t want to use your house as a bank account down the road,” Susanna says. “The qualifying number you are given should be used as a yellow light not an automatic green light for a home purchase.”
They encourage listeners to find a team of people they can trust including a mortgage broker, a real estate agent, and a lawyer who will look at your overall financial picture and advise you wisely.

Good Friday's Alabaster Jar - Rev. Ray Borg

Good Friday's Alabaster Jar - Rev. Ray Borg > The spikenard oil in the alabaster jar, worth a year’s salary, was offered and poured out over Jesus to prepare him for burial. On today’s show, Dave, Reb and Rev. Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada discuss this act of worship and love, and the attitudes condemning it. They dig into how this act and those attitudes are reflected in our own lives today.
Their discussion looks at how this story can affect our lives today, both encouraging us to offer something valuable to Jesus, and to be careful how we judge others who offer gifts to Him that we may not understand or appreciate.
“What is the Lord asking of us today that may be costly to us?” Rev. Borg asks. “Our gift is an act of worship to Him, just as it was for her, for the gift he’s given to each of us through His life, death and resurrection.”
And it is in her life and her gift that Jesus sees what the others could not or would not see.
“Leave her alone,” Jesus says. “Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always. She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” (Mark 14, NKJV)

COVID-19 Updates and Responses

COVID-19 Updates and Responses > Due to the effects of the current global economic and health crisis, Dave and Reb encourage listeners of “Let’s Talk Money” to trust God, have hope, and look at the financial uncertainty ahead from God’s perspective.
Dave and Reb are excited to see how people will trust God as they understand God’s economy is a supernatural one.
“I want to encourage people to look with different eyes and perspective on their circumstances,” Dave says. “I know this is not an easy time, but God is calling us to consider His economy and perspective, moving out of our natural understanding.”
This is done by spending time with Him, enquiring of Him one day at a time, and continuing to be in community.
“We cannot do this on our own,” Reb says. “We all have our anxieties and fears, and we need God and our community around us to keep us going with hope and peace in our hearts.”

COVID-19 Crisis and Market Response with Financial Advisor Lorne Robinson

COVID-19 Crisis and Market Response with Financial Advisor Lorne Robinson > Dave and Reb invite Kingdom Advisor’s National Director Lorne Robinson to today’s “Let’s Talk Money” show, as they look at the effects of the pandemic on markets and personal finance. This show follow’s last week’s discussion on the impact this global crisis is having on Canadian families with regards to mortgages and taxes.
With the response of the markets to the Covid-19 outbreak, Canadians are wondering what they are to do with their market investments. Robinson recommends getting advice from a trusted advisor, but also encourages listeners to keep a long-term perspective at this time. He says that although it is hard to do, it is important to stay the course.
“People are afraid of losing what they have,” he adds. “There is the fear of loss and the fear it will get worse.”
But Robinson wants to remind listeners that this has been the sharpest and quickest decline the market has seen, and it will be a journey and a process for the market to rebound.
“This season will be a process of moving from fear to faith as well,” he says, reminding people that our trust and confidence is not ultimately in the markets, but in God and His love, care and provision for us.
Listen in, and hear their discussion.

RESET: A Response to the COVID-19 Crisis

RESET: A Response to the COVID-19 Crisis > The extraordinary events and circumstances taking place today have not been seen in any time in our written history. Although the world has seen many challenging times, this global pandemic and response is unprecedented. Today on “Let’s Talk Money”, Dave and Reb talk about the current crisis and the financial needs arising from loss of work and sickness.
Proverbs 27:23 reminds us to be diligent to know the state of our flocks, while attending to our herds. This statement is not any less true, and perhaps is even MORE true, as we seek to respond to what is happening globally.
Dave encourages listeners to get in touch with their lenders, or the More Than Enough office if they want answers regarding their current mortgage payment options. Even though deadlines have shifted for income tax payments as well, listeners need to be aware of what that means for them.
“Tax documentation will still need to be submitted, and listeners may want to do that sooner than later, especially if people will receive a financial return,” Dave says, reminding people that prudence and awareness is crucial at this time.
An important part of today’s show includes encouraging people in what Reb calls “a spiritual RESET with God.”
“This is not a time just to binge watch Netflix,” she says. “This is an opportunity to press into our God, and sit with Him and reset our life and priorities as His body. We have long served ease and comfort in place of discipleship and surrender, and He is calling to us in this time to draw near to Him, and learn from Him.”

Socially Responsible Investing

Socially Responsible Investing >  Dave and Reb welcome financial advisor Brent Vandermeer from Crosspoint Financial, an Ottawa-based company, to talk about what it means to research environmental, social and governance policies in business, and how that affects personal investment strategies. Their discussion reflects the idea that there isn’t always an easy way, or answer, for people who want to invest their money in a spiritual, godly and ethical way.
According to Vandermeer, there are a lot of issues to consider when looking at socially responsible investing and how to direct investments for impact, or along certain values parameters.
Research into environmental, social and governance policies and behaviours, appropriate filters, and continuous monitoring are a part of the process of discovery. To hear more of their discussion tune-in and listen, or go to https://www.crosspointfinancial.ca/ for more information.
Vandermeer has done comprehensive work in socially responsible investing, and has written an article for the Christian Courier on the topic. You can find it here: http://www.christiancourier.ca/news/entry/market-mission

Money Stories

Money Stories >  On today’s show, Dave and Reb revisit the topic of reference points and look at how our money stories, and where we come from financially, need to be understood so we can have a healthy financial reference point from our past. They also dig into Romans 12:1 and 2, and the idea of presenting ourselves to God at the beginning of every day as part of having transformed thinking in our finances.
“Imagine yourself every morning at the end of your bed, surrendering your day to God and yielding to Him simply by raising your head and your hands to heaven,” Reb says. “It shifts your focus right at the beginning of the day and reminds us who is really in charge.”
As part of this surrender, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to look at where they come from financially. Did you hear your parents talk about money? Did you have what you needed growing up? Or did you feel that there was lack? Understanding your past relationship with money will help you understand your present behaviour.
“When you understand your behaviour in light of your history with money, it can create some amazing ‘A-Ha’ moments in your life, and can lead to a change in behaviour,” Dave says.
So along with surrendering your daily life to Christ, Dave and Reb recommend taking some time to write out your money story (see today’s blog), and then sharing that story with your spouse or family.
“It’s important to remember that your past debt behaviour doesn’t have to determine your future,” Reb says. “That is why daily surrender is so important. God can re-define it all if you let Him.”

The Road to Emmaus

The Road to Emmaus > In an unlikely Biblical story, Dave and Reb find a source of financial encouragement on today’s show. Through their discussion they discover that as Jesus walks the road with us, as we spend time in His Presence, and as we focus on who He is and what He has done, we gain more and more clarity on what matters to God, and how we can live out those priorities in our finances.
“On our Emmaus Road we awaken to God in our lives and our finances,” Reb says. “Just as the disciples awoke to the truth of Christ, we see how He wants to reveal Himself on our financial journey.”
As that revelation takes place when we spend time with God, we also become aware of some simple practical tools that can help us walk out of our debt.

FACE your finances.
Coaches at More Than Enough use this acronym often.
Financial Awareness Creates Empowerment. We need to know our financial status and be willing to face it before we can start the climb out of debt.

Commit to stop using plastic.
If you are going to get out of debt, you need to commit to stop using credit. We realize it is not always easy, but until you learn how to use credit wisely and pay it off completely on a regular basis, you should not use it.

Commit to paying down debt.
As you stop using credit, you also agree on a set amount of money to go towards your debt repayment weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Put this on automated payments so it is done consistently. Automated payments help you keep your commitment!

Highlighting Biblical Financial Resources

Highlighting Biblical Financial Resources > Regular guest Rev. Ray Borg joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” to review the bible study resources available through Financial Discipleship Canada’s ministry arms Compass Canada and notmine.ca.
Originally written by Howard Dayton, Your Money Counts, Navigating Your Finances God’s Way, Money and Marriage God’s Way, along with several other studies and resources are available through the website. Together they speak about the wisdom God brings through the Scriptures that are highlighted in these studies.
“These studies are great to do on your own or in a group,” Dave says. “If you are interested in starting a study like one of these at your church, just let Ray know and he would be happy to help.”
Today’s show is sponsored by More Than Enough Financial, a social enterprise corporation assisting people on their financial journeys through financial coaching, practical advice and Godly counsel. Go to www.morethanenough.ca for more information, or go to notmine.ca to find the resources talked about on today’s show.

The Power of
Reference Points

The Power of Reference Points > At the start of this new year, Dave and Reb look at the reference points in our lives that can encourage good financial decisions, but also those that don’t. They tackle how we compare ourselves to our neighbours, and how that affects our financial decisions and our happiness.
Looking at Proverbs 23:17, they share God’s perspective and how He admonishes us not to let our hearts envy others, but instead to be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
The homework Dave and Reb leave listeners with this week includes:
         >  Identifying the reference points in our lives.
         >  Asking yourself how these reference points are influencing how you make financial decisions.
         >  Asking yourself how these reference points are affecting your contentment levels.

“Looking at these influencers in our thinking and in our lives can be helpful to understand what is happening within our minds and hearts, and then how those thoughts are affecting our actions,” Reb says. “This is by no means an easy thing to assess, but we want to talk more about these reference points in our lives this year, to help us each grow into a better place of contentment.”
On today’s show, Dave and Reb reference a podcast called the Happiness Lab Episode 3 – A Silver Lining hosted by Dr. Laurie Santos (https://www.happinesslab.fm/). On that podcast you will hear more about the science of reference points and how they affect our lives.

Looking Back at 2019

Looking Back at 2019 > It’s the end of the year, and Dave and Reb look back on 2019 with Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada. They discuss how intentionality and commitment is so important in our financial journeys, as well as understanding how our love of money can affect our relationship with God. They continue to encourage people to depend on God in the year ahead, as well as to commit to “putting your hands on the wheel of your finances” and don’t take them off.
They find perspective and hope in the verses found in Jeremiah 6:16 and 17:
This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But you said, ‘We will not listen.’”
Part of the journey in depending on God in the year ahead is looking to His Word and discovering what “ancient paths” He would have for us. And then trusting Him as He leads us through.
“It’s important to pause and connect with yourself and God this Christmas and New Year’s season,” Dave says. “Then you will be able to listen to the sound of the trumpet – the warning that He gives us about the financial trouble ahead if we continue in debt.”
And this is where the hope lies. We have the presence and wisdom of God Himself leading and guiding us in our finances. Listen in and hear more of their conversation!
