Knowing the Times

“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” ~ Matthew 24:12-14
As His time was drawing to a close on earth, Jesus wanted the disciples to be prepared for what was yet to come. They had experienced life under Roman occupation and thought it was severe but Jesus warned there was much worse to come.
Jesus provides a descriptive understanding of what the situation would look like in Matthew 24 – rumours of wars, nation rising up against nation, famines, pestilences and earthquakes. Sounds pretty much like our current news cast.
In the early part of the chapter in verse 6, Jesus cautions the people from becoming troubled by what they saw and heard, stating that all of these signs need to come to pass.
As I reflect on this chapter, so many of the signs Jesus spoke of are evident today. One then adds the others He mentions – people being offended, hating one another, deception arising, lawlessness growing and the love of many growing cold.
Upon further reflection of the latter descriptors, I wonder how many are rooted in the need for money, power and control. These issues are prevalent around the world and very much the fabric of today’s culture. Unfortunately, my observation is that these very issues are also becoming evident in the church
Jesus warned His disciples and the people – chose whom you will serve – the Lord or mammon (Matthew 6:24). Mammon is bed partners with greed and a desire for power and control. Mammon’s influence is part of today’s landscape and will only grow in greater power as people fall under its power due to fear and anxiety about how to survive in hard times. This spirit is another sign of the times.
I believe that the Lord desires us to be dependent on Him, trusting Him for our provision and security rather than money or any other thing. In a time of uncertainty as Jesus described in Matthew 24, we are to be about the work of the Father. Jesus did not focus on the tyranny of the Roman occupation, but taught about the Kingdom of heaven being at hand. He commanded His disciples to preach the gospel and disciple all nations.
I would encourage us all to consider what are the signs of the time as His Word describes and as we scan the landscape of today’s world. We need to guard our hearts in the midst of these realities and the issues that would cause us to lose our focus. Jesus invited us to be a part of His Kingdom work. Are we seeing the gospel preached and going to the nations? Do we each have a role to play in seeing this happen?
I believe that is the case for each one of us. May we keep our focus on what God has called us to do in this season while at the same time discerning the times in which we live.
