What Roots are Growing in Your Garden

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” ~ 1 Timothy 6:10
Over the summer, we had a new deck built in our backyard with a plan to make the rest of the yard into a garden. I realized I had one challenge that would require some effort and skill to see this goal realized. A stump left from a tree cut down the previous year we rooted deeply in the grounds.
As I began turning over the soil to start the garden and worked closer to the stump, I found numerous roots growing out from it. The closer to the stump - the thicker the roots. Slowly I chopped away at the various roots, severing them one by one. After much sweat and effort, I was finally able to lift the remnants of the stump out of the ground.
Paul in the verse above describes the ‘love of money’ as being a root. A root develops when something is planted and begins to grow, becoming numerous in number and increasing in size and strength. Sin is like that in our lives. When we have a desire - as for money, its power and control over our lives and others, this root grows in strength and depth.
Allowing access by the enemy, the root grows and becomes a stronghold in our lives. If we give room to bitterness and unforgiveness, it creates a barrier in our relationship with the Lord. If we become money-focused, we open the door to greed and deception. Often shame and condemnation grow along with this focus, which results in a vicious cycle. Like my root in the garden, they take much effort to uproot.
Jesus knew these roots could severely impact our relationship with Him. Paul, as we read into the above verse, challenges Timothy to be aware of how the love of money can influence us and those around us. He encourages Timothy to watch out for this pattern personally and in those most dear to him.
In fact, Paul warns that this love affair can cause some to walk away from their relationship with the Lord, replacing their trust in God for His care and provision, with the belief money will meet all their needs. This lie from the enemy grows in strength and becomes well rooted into their lives, beliefs and behaviours. The ‘love of money’ leads to greed and incredible sorrow or grief because as it disappoints and affects every area of one’s life.
The challenging act of uprooting the stump from my lawn showed me the veracity in which we need to protect ourselves from any root including the love of money, to begin to shape and form us. The greater entrance into our lives, the greater the stronghold developed. The stronger the stronghold, the more challenging to uproot it from our heart and lives.
Allowing the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and lives will reveal anywhere the love of money might have wittingly or unwittingly taken root. It is never too soon to deal with this root and uproot it from our lives. Ask Him to help you get free.
