In Time of Uncertainty

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
I find myself pondering these days what our future might be. The pandemic continues to make itself known, reports highlight numbers of cases and nations struggle to gain control while considering another lockdown.
Listening to the varied opinions and opposing views can be overwhelming emotionally, psychologically and absolutely confusing. One senses that long gone are the days when people believed and trusted in their leaders and professional experts.
Voices from some Christian circles believe religious freedoms are being infringed upon and dissenting voices silenced. For some there is a strong longing to return to full worship services, a gathering to hear the Word and worship once again together in one place.
So, how do I keep perspective in these days?
I am reminded in my quiet times with the Lord that I need to keep my eyes fastened on Him. He is my sole source of strength, comfort and encouragement, my sole source of provision, security and peace.
Paul’s words to the New Testament church were written in a time of persecution. They were oppressive days politically yet the church prospered and grew. Opposition caused the early Church to grow in maturity, to gather together in homes to hear the Word, pray and fellowship together, see the Gospel spread and look to the day of Christ’s return.
We are living in similar days around the globe. Once again, the Gospel is going forth in unique ways and impacting people’s lives with many coming to faith. Over the past few days, I have heard of reports of ministries’ having an on-line presence and witness, people reaching out to them, desperate for a word of hope and encouragement. In some instances, these people are in isolation, either in hospitals or quarantine, and reaching out through various forms of media and being touched by the Lord. Their hearts are so open and hungry for truth. One article entitled “Where is God in the Midst of Tragedy had been read some 60,000 times. (Check out indigitous.org to learn and hear more.)
As I reflect on Paul’s words, I am encouraged that God has a plan for our lives and the Body of Christ. He is still seated on the throne (Ps. 2), watches over the affairs of our lives and is firmly in control. Nothing of our current world affairs is a surprise to Him.
As One who stretched forth the heavens, He brought forth light and darkness and gave mankind the ability to choose their own path. His perspective and plan are so much larger than our limited, finite ability to grasp what is happening to ourselves and those around us in these days.
It is in Him we trust and look towards in days of uncertainty, confusing messages, and increasing violence around the globe. May we find our rest and security in Him these days.
