The Sifting of the Heart - Jesus' Promise to Us

“Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34
Just before His death, Jesus told Peter that He would be praying for him as the enemy came to sift his heart (Luke 22:31-34). He knew the pressures that would be coming against Peter in the days ahead would work something into him and was letting him know He would be praying for him.
This account gave me pause - are we experiencing a time of sifting today?
Today we find ourselves in unusual circumstances. What we thought we knew yesterday is no longer a given or a definite today. Each day brings new information and changing circumstances, if not for ourselves, for loved ones or people we know.
The metaphor of the refinement process of precious metals used in Scriptures helps us to grasp what the Spirit of the Lord may be doing in this season. The intensity of fire to bring purity to the metals is exacting and uncompromising. There is no way around the process of bringing forth pure gold or silver. 1 Cor. 3:10-15 defines the process.
Some would say they have already experienced purifying fires in past seasons. The residue of burnt smoke lingers in their nostrils. Some still sting from the burning process. Others bear the scars, recovering day by day.
We are all experiencing an intensity of the unknown, not only wondering if the COVID-19 virus will strike us or those near to us, but what about the implications of the pandemic? Our financial situation is suddenly brought into sharp focus. Layoffs are suddenly announced, businesses are closed, stock markets with investments and retirement funds are disappearing rapidly, and the simple task of finding needed groceries and paying for them becomes a challenge. The list goes on and on. Each of us is trying to find the new normal with no end in sight.
We find new ways of coping. Some of them not so healthy. Fear and anxiety may become our new bedfellows. These emotions may give way to poor financial choices. We occupy our time with online shopping or make reactive decisions about investments and even panic buying of items that could take months and years to consume.
Jesus knew all these emotions and reactions had the potential to take us off course in our faith journey. In moments like this we have a choice to make. Do we cry out to the Lord for help and allow Him to do His purifying work in our lives?
The above verse is a promise to hold onto. Jesus is praying for you. He is praying for me.
May we hold onto this promise in this time of uncertainty. May we take comfort that He has our best interests at heart.
