The Power of Repentance and Forgiveness

We all have found ourselves in places or moments of time when we feel we have made poor financial decisions for whatever reason. We live with the consequences of our decisions, sometimes lasting for years and years. We wonder if there will be any end to the suffering…often done in silence without the knowledge of those closest to us. Other occasions, the mistake is front and centre for all to see.
It could be the loss of a job due to a firing thus leading to a car being re-possessed, possessions removed due to lack of payment and a house needing to be sold because mortgage payments can no longer be made.
It could be a lifestyle of always spending beyond your means which then leads to the constant flow of bills into our mailboxes, over-due notices, threatening calls from collection agencies become more aggressive over time and the threat of needing to declare bankruptcy become present day reality.
Maybe your experience comes nowhere close to those realities. It may be as simple as buying something spontaneously on credit when you said you were not going to do that again, perhaps an on-line purchase you are hiding from your loved one or a cheque book that does not balance.
These experiences, some more severe than others, still impact our lives and walk with the Lord. Subtly and without question, there is a sense of shame, guilt and condemnation that creeps upon you. For some reason or another, you feel a sense of distance from the Lord. The sense may be difficult to identify, but there is a vague feeling something is lurking but not sure what it is.
In our walk with the Lord, the enemy uses subtle ways to create a sense of alienation between the Lord and us; that He is disappointed in us and has distanced Himself from us. For some there is even the sense, depending on our sense of Fatherhood, that the Lord may come after us with ‘big stick’ to punish us.
These subtleties are ploys of the enemy to take us off course in our relationship with the Lord, to sow lies into our thinking, to destroy the intimacy we share with Him.
Yet we read in Romans 2:4 "Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?" His loving kindness draws us to enter into that place where we can come into the presence of the Lord and confess our sin, share our heart and disappointments with Him, and release them to Him.
As we read in 1 John 1: 9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” There is a place of finding release and relief from the weight of poor financial choices, decisions and habits.
This process is called repentance and with it comes forgiveness. What a gift! Jesus made a way for each one of us. As we confess Him as our Lord and Saviour, He meets with us and releases His unmerited grace, enabling strength and restoration. He claims us as His own, lifts the weight and burden of our sin, restores us to right relationship with Him and a sense of cleansing that runs deep and pure.
We are free to journey onwards unhindered by any shame from the past course of actions. The slate has wiped clean and we are free to start over, to walk a new path and try once again. If we fail and fall again, His arms are open wide and welcoming. We only need to run to Him and confess once again, forgive ourselves, and receive His forgiveness.
May I encourage you to take a few moments and ask the Lord what ‘weights’ are you carrying with you right now. What shame, guilt and condemnation has plagued your journey with Him. As He puts His finger on those things you may have hidden, pushed away, or shoved down deep inside, confess and release them to the Lord. He comes with no condemnation or need to punish. He welcomes and bids us to come to Him freely. The freedom from shame, guilt and condemnation is liberating.
Thank God for the power of repentance and forgiveness!
