Provision Follows Obedience

“ Go sell the oil and pay your debt: and you and your sons live on the rest.” ~ 2 Kings 2:7
The Bible has many examples of God’s provision at times when there was a significant need. He provided daily manna and quail for the Israelites, fed the multitudes with bread and fishes, a coin to pay taxes and daily provision for the disciples’ journey with Jesus.
We read of an account in 2 Kings 2 where a widow who is in debt and has no food for her sons and herself. She seeks out Elisha, explains the situation and asks what she should do. Elisha asks what resources are available to her, and provides unusual and unique directions which made no sense to the natural mind. However, she does as directed and completes what Elisha directs her to do to the end.
In this account, the widow takes a seemingly insignificant resource – a jar of oil. One would wonder what use that might be. However, from God’s vantage point, it is a resource in His hands. Elisha instructs her to go to the neighbours and asks for their empty jars. I am sure they must have been scratching their heads as to why she would want the jars as more than likely it was not harvest time when one might be taking olives and making oil – so why the need now? Yet, she is obedient and follows through on Elisha’s directions to her.
She takes these empty jars and brings them into her home, closing the door with only her sons and herself present. She closed out ‘prying eyes’, the ‘naysayers’ and those who might have mocked what she was doing. The widow removed unnecessary voices into her situation.
We watch as she fills every jar available until they are all full. She seeks out Elisha one more time and he directs her to sell the oil and pay off her debts and live off the remaining proceeds.
The widow sought godly counsel not once but twice, removed distractions and ‘other voices’ and followed through with faith and obedience to see her provision released.
When was the last time you sought the Lord for His leading for your financial situation? Did you seek wise, godly counsel from those knowledgeable in this area? Were you obedient to discipline yourself and follow through in what was proposed?
The widow was asked to do something fairly unusual even when she did not understand the implications of her actions. Yet, she was obedient to heed the voice of Elisha’s insightful counsel.
May we recognize our need for help in the midst of our financial troubles, giving no place in our hearts to pride and shame that would hold us back. May we present our need to Him and seek godly counsel that we obediently follow through. As we do so, may we see God’s ability to provide in unusual ways and release His provision for all our needs.
