Our Financial Achille's Heel

“Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.” Matthew 27: 9 – 10
The other day, I was reflecting on how we sometimes can hear the Lord speaking to us through His Word and Spirit and yet the truth finds no resting place in our thinking or heart. It is as if Teflon has coated our ears and eyes, making us unable to hear and see as the Lord would want us to do so.
As I thought further about this, I was reminded of Judas. He was a disciple of the Jesus, walking with Him for the entirety of His ministry on earth. Part of Jesus’ inner circle of twelve, he was chosen by Jesus to follow Him and Judas did so.
Judas heard Jesus’ teaching, watched His interactions with the masses, and saw the miracles and the signs and wonders that became commonplace in the lives of the disciples. He travelled the dusty roads of the countryside with his fellow disciples, breaking bread with them and enjoying the stories and laughter. He heard fresh teaching, received instruction selected for only a few and had so many opportunities to receive all that Jesus wanted to impart to him.
Judas held one very specific role within the ranks of the disciples – he was the keeper of the money bag and was known to help himself to its contents. (John 12:6). Despite this weakness, Jesus chose him as one of His disciples. This vulnerability became his Achille’s heel - an area that eventually led him to betraying Jesus. He never truly heard the fullness of what Jesus taught – never letting it settle into his heart and bring healing.
He received thirty pieces of silver for betraying Jesus. Thirty pieces of silver was the price for a slave. Is this how much value Judas placed on Jesus’ life and his relationship with Him - the One with whom he had walked for three years and saw and learned so much?
How could one betray a friend like Jesus for thirty silver coins? The draw of money was Judas’ Achille’s heel, the unhealed area of his heart that he just could not let go of. In a moment of time, he sold his soul for some coins. His relationship with money got the best of him.
Like Judas, we can be on the inside (the inner circle) but yet on the outside (never yielding our hearts) in our relationship with the Lord. Our words can be token lip service, but our sincerity of heart falls short. Our hearts and minds can deceive us, just as it did for Judas.
Jesus invites us as He did with Judas, to come with an open heart and hands, surrendering all to Him – every area of the heart, including our finances, addressing our Achille’s heel.
