What of Yours is Being Shaken Free?

“ The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,” declares the Lord of hosts.” Haggai 1:8
Earlier this week I was reading from the book of Haggai and ran across a very interesting section in Chapter One. It reads as follows – “For thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Once more I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts. “And in this place, I will give peace,’ says the Lord of hosts.” (verses 6 -9)
As I read this passage, I was struck by the realization that we are actually living in a time of shaking. Global in nature, the pandemic has touched into every corner of the earth. God is shaking the nations to bring them to Himself. The prophet Haggai also speaks about God filling His temple with His glory. This would have been in reference to Zerubbabel’s rebuilding of the temple.
What grabbed my attention in this passage, was the verse about the gold and silver. Why did the prophet insert this statement? What was the Lord bringing to light?
I discovered in the ESV there are a few additional words “…so that the treasures of all nations shall come in...” The implication is that the wealth of the nations belongs to the Lord and will be used for His purposes, specifically, the re-building of the temple.
As I pondered the prophet’s words, they re-affirmed my sense from the Scriptures that the Lord owns all that we hold dear to our hearts – our money and possessions.
Having lived in an earthquake zone for a year and having experienced various earthquakes of varying strength, I discovered what happens when one experiences a ‘shaking’ as the prophet speaks of here. You find yourself holding on to what is familiar and provides security.
When everything around us is being shaken, we want to grasp onto things that are of importance to us, things we value and appreciate - even things that we put our trust in like our wealth.
Shakings can have varying faces and can be of political, economic, spiritual, or of emotional nature. The implications can be far reaching into our surrounding and internally.
In Haggai, the Lord reminds us so clearly the wealth we may so dearly hold onto actually belongs to Him. When the shaking hits, our grasp of those things may be loosened despite our attempts to hold on tightly. Our hearts are tested. Will we yield and release, or will we struggle to maintain our grip? Do we see the ‘gold and silver’ as ours, or do we acknowledge they belong to Him?
What might the Lord be shaking free in your life this season?
