Modern Day Slavery - Have You Become a Slave?

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves; I have broken the bands of your yoke and made you walk upright.” Lev. 26:13
The Lord heard the cry of the Israelites as they served as slaves labouring under harsh conditions in Egypt under the ruler Pharaoh for over 400 years. The Lord led them out into the desert for 40 years to get Egypt “out” of their way of thinking, expectations and practices and transition them into the promised land.
A friend and I were discussing recently this history recorded in the Bible and how in reality many Christians are finding themselves back in Egypt once again.
As I pondered this I realized that the Lord provided some clear instructions about how to manage one’s affairs to walk in the fullness of the His blessings. Deuteronomy 27 & 28 gives a whole list of guidelines about life’s issues that result in people walking under curses or blessings.
The Lord knew that money was one of those issues that had the potential to take people off course in their worship of Him. Having experienced and suffered intense persecution, the desire to be free of slavery through wealth and possessions had a strong pull on the Israelites thoughts and hearts. In light of this, God set out clear parameters, or what I call ‘guard rails’ so they did not get off course in living their lives for Him.
I am not so sure these days, if we have not found ourselves back to this place of “slavery”. The culture of today and the voices surrounding us whether it be social media, advertising or the internet, seeks to entice us at the core of our beings. Messaging around “you deserve it”, “treat yourself” and “you have worked hard – reward yourself” are ever present impacting us consciously and unconsciously.
Often, without even any awareness, we often fall prey to these overt and subliminal influences. Before realizing it, we find ourselves living beyond our means, carrying and servicing debt that is slowly crushing our lives. Rather than us deciding where our money goes, we are making required payments to lines of credit, credit cards or other readily available loans that are too costly and lengthy.
In my mind, this in reality becomes a form of slavery. Slavery defined means “a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them”. A slave related to “one who works excessively hard”. We have allowed ourselves to come under the ‘jurisdiction’ of our debt, being obligated to make payments and directing our finances to appease contractual agreements with our instruments of debt.
God’s heart for us is to be free of the ensnarement of money and possessions. They are meant not to ‘own’ us or fulfill our desire for contentment, identity or worth, but to be expressions of worship to Him and tools in our hands for His Kingdom purposes.
